So my coworkers are having a competition to see who can lose the most weight in 30 days. We all put $10 into a pot and whoever loses the most, wins the money. My responsibility as a parent is to TEACH my children how to fend for themselves in the world. This is something best taught by example.
There is nothing I can GIVE except my time, love and understanding.
There is nothing I can DO for them except be an encouraging presence in their lives to support and cheer them in their triumphs and console and commisserate with them on their failures. This I can do despite any physical distance between us.
My point to you is, weekly phone check-ins and ongoing communication are more valuable than any other THING you can do. I have watched and listened as other friends whose parents weren't present in their lives repeatedly maintained that the only thing they regretted was not having their parent's thoughts and input and experiences to learn from.
