I will probably be a cross country truck driver sometime in the next few months. I have to quit my job at the help desk because I'm still not taking classes. I don't want to take classes anymore because I hate school and I can't afford it. I'd like to finish up and get a degree sometime, but I'm honestly not sure what it would be in or if I would ( Read more... )

My Grandpa was a truck driver. But if it still works the way it did when he did it you might not like it as much as you think. He basically did the same trip over and over again. Take object A to point B, pick up object B and bring it back to Point A, repeat ad nausium.

you're right, that would suck. i have to think that driving all day everyday would kinda suck too, but that's also why you get paid pretty well. it doesn't seem like the company i'm looking is like that either. the trips are usually quite long, like >1500 miles, and they have tons of them all over the place. could go either way i guess, and either way it's not something i want to be doing forever.

my friend (mom's friend) tried truck driving for a while, and hated it. i guess a lot of the companies really try to stiff drivers through deceit and not following through with what was promised. all i know is that he was miserable for the half year or however long it was he drove.

all i can say is be prepared. he's rather middle-aged, so if you go through some of the same experiences, maybe it won't bother you as much since you're still a young buck.

my advice would be to do your best to keep a perspective on it, and use it for what you are planning for now. (an email of the same sort is forthcoming.)

My dad trucked for awhile when he was out of work, and left them after a few months on not so great terms. Needless to say, i would simply warn to watch your ass from management types.... but as having been a young middleschooler back then, and having a fairly volatile father, it may have been his problem as much as theirs. meh.

and as for XM or Sirius... i had an opinion on this, but i can never remember which one was supposed to be the preferred one. I think one has a lot more subscribers than the other, but i can't remember which. Boy, what a bastion of helpful wisdom am i.

My uncles are truck drivers, and they love it, because they can see the world. Watch out for the hemmrhoids though. hehe

I know what you mean about school hurting your soul.
