Walk it off. Don't think. Just walk. You're stronger than this, Nite Owl. You have to be.

He hadn't even seen it happen. Just had the memories so fresh in his mind and the grief still gnawing in his stomach and going back to see New York, to spend a few days trying to help with all of the dead before it was just too much...

Don't think. Don't think about it..

The voice made him jump. He should've taken Archie, then he wouldn't have to talk. Wouldn't have to explain where he'd been.

But as he turned and saw the friendly smiling mask, he had to relax a little. This man didn't seem the type to press him into spilling all his secrets. Not when he worked so hard at keeping his own. Nite Owl didn't know much about V but he could tell he wasn't like himself. He didn't really exist outside the costume. No, he was more like-

Don't think.

"Oh, hello. I wouldn't mind some company, actually." Polite conversation, an argument, anything to stop the grief.

“Excellent! I’d noticed you out and about, and thought I would offer.” V caught up easily, though he appraised the other carefully during the approach. The little jump hadn’t gone unnoticed; the nerves were duly noted. “They do say a true traveler is one without a destination in mind, all others only tourists, but the question still stands.” He had closed the distance and started by, but twisted to look back without turning; at that angle, the smile was wry. “Perhaps the ‘they’ of ‘they say’---in that case, anyway---had been hopelessly lost but hid it by bluffing.”

"Maybe," Nite Owl replied, smirking at the joke, "Or maybe they just understand the benefits of getting lost every once in a while more than the average person and are trying to get us all in on the joke."

He caught up with V, and continued walking. "So what have you been up to, my fellow masked friend?"

“Maybe. At least half the fun of the travel is the aesthetic of lostness, although I believe the great affair is to move, as it is a gamble. Way leads on to way; placing one foot before the other is a risky endeavor when no-one knows where it will end. I suppose it doesn’t matter where one intends to be, eventually, when the world may intervene.” V drummed his fingers against the enamel of one cheek, shrugged to himself, and left the thought at that, though he laughed aloud at the question. “Day-to-day business, but none of it dull! I still enjoy stopping people to speak on the street---you’ve seen sufficient evidence of that---as it’s still a treat. I’ve a great deal of reading to do, and my roses to tend to. I’ve been Bending, and although I’m improving on my own, I’m open to any advice regarding the Bending of bigger and better things. What about you?”
