I know the feeling about the Chinese family dinner thing. It seems like kids should just talk when being talked to directly, so I think you did just fine.

And... omg, I had so much sugar after a Ghiradelli shake from the Square that my brother thought I was insane (I ran up some flights of stairs that were in the square).
