It wasn't hard to figure out what the girls were thinking as they drew away from the same confines of the school campus, away from even the well-walked streets of the nearby town, and closer to lesser-traveled roads, to unfamiliar territory. Honestly, it was Jimmy's first time to such places as well, but he had the blatant and unfortunate disregard for his own health that sometimes came with the perceived infallibility of youth, with young boys in particular. He had brought his sister along, and while he wasn't worried in the very least that she'd be able to hold her own, the girls other than Eleanor were beginning to look a little antsy. The group - four well-groomed, obviously well-fed children - drew obvious stares from the people that usually frequented the area, huddled in threadbare, worn, and dull-colored clothes that were thrown onto their frames layer by layer, gathering around in small groups for heat and under the bridge for shelter. It was still light enough to see outside, but even the shade of the bridge overhead made their looks a little ominous.

Without even having to speak up, they were approached first - an old man, beady-eyed but at least clean-shaven, stepped right into their path ( ... )

Eleanor drew back reflexively as the man stepped into view, drawing her hands to her chest. The stranger’s surveying glance injected a pinch of discomfort into the girl’s expression. Swallowing air, she composed herself, stepping up beside her brother. Perhaps she wasn’t raised to be manly and courageous, but she disliked being seen as the weaker half. “About the disappearances lately,” She began. “Have you heard anything about them?”
