Peter sat down in his booth, the waitress giving him a small smile as she approached his table. “The usual, Pete?” she asked, putting down a steaming cup of coffee in front of him. As Peter took a sip of his coffee, she pulled out a pen.

Peter leaned back in his seat some as he smiled shyly at her. )

Ugh, Peter. On the one hand, he seems like a super-sweet guy who was probably just shy and too cautious and I kind of get it. I mean, all too often people don't appreciate other people butting into their business or telling them what to do. So I get it's hard to speak up sometimes when you're concerned about a friend (or someone you wish was your friend).

But dude. "When the time came"? When was that gonna be? When the bruises were on her face, too? Augh, so frustrating.

And yeah, I think you made the right decision to rewrite this chapter because it's a lot easier and more comfortable for the reader to feel that frustration toward a character who seems just... overly passive/cautious rather than depressed. And to a great extent, a depressed person can't help it, so would it really be a sin?

Yeah, I was just like Oh, Peter, the whole time. Because you're right -- if those bruises weren't reason enough, what would be?

I'm glad that you think so, because Evan was really adamant against having it sound anything remotely like depression. And when he speaks up against something, well... I know he's got a reason to be concerned.
