Ryan hitched up his backpack on a single shoulder and glanced around the busy street. He shoved his hands in his pockets, head hanging as the voices of his fellow students continued to follow him on his long walk home.
“Going to your rat’s nest, Carrier?” someone said to his left.

Ryan didnt so much as blink, instead lifting his head and throwing his shoulders back. )

It would be fascinating if the disease really was real. That would mean the conflict here was not society making something up (or believing something that wasn't true), but rather the conflict would be how a *scare-quote* civilized *un-scare-quote* society deals with a very real threat.

In previous drafts/iterations of this, the Disease WAS real. At least, it was several generations before the events of the novel. Whether it's still a risk, considering the number of times the human race has undergone engineering at this point, I'm not sure.
But I do kind of want it to be real. Whether Ryan's a "Carrier" or not has yet to be determined.
