I still don't feel overly sure about this fic, maybe because it's all angst and nothing else or maybe because I'm out of practice...or, I dunno, maybe because I wrote it in past tense and I'm more likely to let myself play if it's present tense. *shrug*

This is absolutely beautiful. The way that he can't stay away... the he wants and doesn't want to trust her. The way she can guess his thoughts... the way it hurts... and the way staying away from each other, not seeing each other just hurts more.

Speaking as an angst fan (:P), I thought this was a great read -- it conveys their pain and longing vividly but without going too far. I really like the way Tonks hovers on the edge of exasperation but is too concerned about Remus to actually get angry. And the way Remus thinks he should stay away, but can't, quite, says so much about how Greyback is grinding him down. The tiny flashback to a happier time works well to highlight the contrast, too.

I like this part a lot, for the topsy-turvy sense of Tonks's emotions that it gives: A momentary spark of anger at Remus for not trusting her enough withered in a surge of fury at Greyback for bringing Remus to this point-and then the rush of emotion bled away altogether, leaving her brittle and fragile and inexpressibly weary.

And the ending does bring with it a tiny bit of hope -- your author's note says this is shortly before the end of HBP, so I guess we are seeing the chinks in Remus's armor.
