I'd like to do research on serial killers, much to the dismay of my mother. I find them fascinating.

I realize this book is fictional ... but nonetheless you'll get brownie points if you can guess it.

"A census taker tried to quantify me once. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a big Amarone. Go back to school, little Starling."

And yet, the character in the book was based on an actual serial killer - Ed Gein. (as well as Psycho, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre - Ed got around!) I started to read up on the serial killers a few years ago and it really is fascinating stuff to find what makes them tick.

I avoid reading anything to do with stuff like that. My ocd makes me think that if I read or watch things with that subject that I will turn into one.
