Why I Am Cutting Ties With Team In Training

Oct 01, 2008 21:16

As most of you know, since 2005 I have been heavily involved in Team In Training. I have served six seasons, I have run five marathons, I have been a mentor twice, I have been a web captain once, I have raised more than $17,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Up until now, my seventh season, I have had nothing but positive things to say ( Read more... )

Man, that sucks that they screwed you like that. Stupid bureaucrats. Could you say you're going to run, go up and stay in your hotel, and then just... not run, and have it be too late for them to do anything about it? If you're severing ties with them, why not?

But then I wouldn't have been able to tranfer 75% of the raised funds to a future season. When I contacted them, I expected them to be reasonable and refund my personal money for the hotel and party ticket.

Oh, I thought you weren't doing any more seasons with them.

Not after this.
I will run Nike next year, but most likely it will be on my own unless I have a sudden change of heart. I'll do it for 3 reasons:

1. To keep my commitment to the people who donated
2. Because I like the race
3. Because I have a personal vendetta against the race...this race always tries to bring me down, I will not let it beat me.

I can't stand the "it's a matter of policy" excuse. No... it just means you're too lazy to figure out a solution.

You're such a sweet person and really shouldn't have to deal with that kind of treatment. I've gotta say I fully support your decision to leave the Team in Training. If they can't appreciate you then it's their loss.

While it won't keep me from participating as soon as I can with TnT I don't have strong enough words to express my dismay at how they're treating you. Like others above, and myself working in a customer service position, stating that something is a matter of policy is avoiding an opportunity to find a solution. It may end up being a compromise on both sides but in this case it appears that they were not willing to compromise. That *does* suck.

Still love all you've done. Cutting ties does not erase a history of endeavor nor does it obfuscate a spirit of charity and action that inspires the rest of us. You're not a hero because you specifically participated with TnT. You're a hero because you chose to participate at all.

I've got your back.

I'm glad that you will still participate with Team In Training despite my recent experience. When everything goes like it should, they are a great organization that treats their participants and volunteers very well. However, in my new experience, I have learned how cut-throat and cold they can be. That does not erase all the wonderful times I have had with the organizaiton, but it prevents me from wanting to go back for more.
