It's interesting stuff. I was puzzled by the etymology of Màiri "bitter." I'd heard that the source-name (Hebrew Mariam) meant "rebel" or "curvy/beautiful." But, on looking around a bit, I guess the Hebrew root mar- can mean "bitter" as well.
I wish I knew Irish or Welsh. They're cool looking (and sounding) languages. Interesting mythological traditions, too.
I am puzzled by that as well; I thought that "Máire" or (I guess) Màiri were just Irish spellings of the name Mary, and that Mary itself comes from some Hebrew word that means bitter (Marah or something).
I'm not sure, but I thought that Mariam is the Arabic version. But of course that doesn't mean that's all it is.
I post those "I don't know if it's accurate" disclaimers all the time because I don't know the languages either. :) They are so hard! I found a few online resources for them but I keep having to take breaks from it. They are complicated.
