I've renewed this book a number of times and I don't know how many more times until I'm forced to return it, so I should write this thing right now. ghentz, this is the book I mentioned in my Starship Troopers review.

From Alien to The matrix: reading science fiction film. This is a film criticism book. I haven't seen a number of the movies it talks ( Read more... )

having read "mythmaker" now, i can say with reasonable certainty that most of leigh brackett's work on tesb was thrown out and the bulk of the script is original lawrence kasdan material (writer of raiders and jedi) or stuff to which he paid homage (or "stole" if you like).

speaking of mr. kasdan, his sister-in-law visits the cp library regularly. i asked her about her last name once and that's how i know they are related by marriage. she's known him since they were kids.

i think you got the ford script quote pretty much right.

sounds like an awesome book. the bits on "starship troopers" and "galaxy quest" were fun. i disagree, but not strenuously, on its take on stroopers. then again, the way i say the film should be viewed sounds an awful lot like what you say lucas said (MEANT to do that), and what tarantino fans say about "kill bill." oh well. :)

Heheheh, someone should alert the author about Brackett's work.

I think Starship Troopers should be viewed as dumb fun, not to be taken seriously. Disagree?

no, i'm suggesting viewing starship troopers as satire, rather than dumb fun. sort of the edge of the coin that consists of artsy, serious takes (heads) and schlockness monsters (tails).

in other words, view most actions advocated by the film as exactly the opposite of what you would do in the same situation, big-picture-wise. apply it to the war on terror (= war on bugs) and factor in how i feel about it. there you go. am i making sense, or is it too late?

enjoy that i waited more than two years to reply? surprised? i haven't kissed a man in a long time.

Yeah I know it was meant to be satire, I just think it didn't do a great job, so I view it as kind of dumb fun. But then I haven't seen it in many years, so next time I watch it I'll think about what you said.

Also I think you should go to sleep.
