Reuters, of course, lied. Grebski did not "vaguely" remember the family gatherings as he was in a coma: he heard every word, he was just incapable of reacting. That has actually been the case in literally hundreds of such awakenings, indeed may be counted as a regularity in cases of extended coma. It is not, however, publicized (and Reuter's lie is right in the mainstream of normal behaviour), because, one, it would discourage the killing of such patients, and, second, it would discredit the concept of "brain death", which allows the crude but lucrative traffic in living human parts that is a part of transplant surgery.

His wife says he remembers anything and has talked about them, including his children's weddings.
Maybe he remembers everything, but not in detail? Am I always going to try to reconcile different stories? Maybe.
