I think Google actually overcounts -- I ran through my picfor1000 story this morning and freaked out a bit because Word was telling me yay, exactly 1000 words, and then Google went and said I had 1023.

Counting every stupid word myself gave me the same result as Word. I have yet to figure out where Google is coming up with 23 extra words, in fact.

Having discovered major discrepancies between the PC and Mac versions of Word's word count, I'm not sure what to tell you in terms of accuracy. However, I think it's only reasonable to use Word's count if that's what you've been going on all this time.
