He should have been to blame this, the same way Logan had blamed him for Jean's death, for Charles' death in the future. Blamed for killing Shaw, driving the coin through his head while Charles held onto him and then had the nerve to fight him back because he was too stubborn to see past his own beliefs, the same man he had grown far too close to in the aftermath of it all.

Another careless mistake on his part, driven by curiosity for the woman who had gotten the better of Charles, to see how alike she was in her fascination for the man he had grown to care for. It was a repeat of Shaw, an undeniable action for action repeat of the man who had callously killed the one person Erik unconditionally loved. Until Charles. Everything would come back to him, a perfect reminder of how intertwined they were now. Yet despite that connection, Erik betrayed it again, reaching out on his own to get things so unbelievably wrong because he trusted himself over his friend, his own pride and ego and believe that no one could hurt him ( ... )

How can an icon be so hot and so heartbreaking at the same time. :( excessivehubris November 17 2011, 03:33:55 UTC
It was hard to keep his mind to himself, to not reach out and attempt to sooth the other man in the most direct manner available to him. But Charles had to imagine that Erik had had enough of people racketing around in his head and he wasn't going to take such a liberty without being invited.

At least not for the moment.

Sliding down to his heels, balanced beside Erik's knee, Charles laid a hand on his leg, maintain physical contact in lieu of mental. The look in his friend's pale eyes was worrisome, mirrored in the concern of Charles's own expression as he tried to reach Erik.

"Avoiding it, won't change it, my friend. We've seen and heard of these events before, from Logan."

"I could change it, Charles," he answered softly, looking down at his friend. There was no use trying to hide the way he looked, when Charles mirrored that perfectly. "I can't betray you, not like that."

Erik scoffed at the shift of tone in his voice, the undeniable vulnerability and hurt that rang through his words. Had he really fallen apart like that? Such a far cry from where Erik had been standing only 24 hours ago. Dru's words had simply hurt, that Charles didn't deserve to put up with him knowing what Erik did and yet the man still came to him regardless.

Elbows pressed against his legs, Erik leaned in close to Charles, further maintaining that physical connection they had. "You shouldn't have to stay with me."

Sliding one leg behind the other, in that ever restless way of his, Charles leaned into Erik's leg, letting his body language speak for him as he lifted his fingers to brush them along his friend's hand.

"There is no have to about it, Erik," he said softly. "I stay, because its my choice. Here and back home as well."

Setting his chin on the older man's knee, Charles looked up into hooded grey eyes.

"I've been thinking about what Logan said and through the tragedy of it, something struck me," he paused, making sure he had Erik's attention. "It was us, my friend. Good or bad and life is both but it was us tangled inexorably together at the end."
