A chum of mine from college used to talk about drawing gestures. Contrary to how that might sound, they weren't just expressions, or hand motions. Rather, these gestures are apparently very fast, shaky drawings. Not something you put a lot of detail into.
I suppose, that given the lack of posing in court artistry, a significant portion of your mentor's work would be modified gestures. That might be why he's so focused on speed.
So, you just get paid to draw people as they sit up on the stand and stuff? I never got that job, you know? Doesn't make any sense. Why do we need one?

It's sort of a job! I get 50¢ a day practicing with Mr. Parmelee...and it might go up to 75¢ when I get into the court room...
