Okay, I spent a while digging around for information and stumbled onto the Anime on DVD forums. There's a FUNimation representative who posts there and there's a thread on details for the upcoming "remastered" release

Yes, but bootlegs don't go back to support the original Japanese franchise which in turn lets them know that there is an audience wanting Slayers and may encourage them to make more - hence how we got the Kenshin second OVA, etc.

I'm glad that Slayers is finally available for new fans and people who missed out on the old sets. But I wish Funi had been able to announce these details a little sooner. When Funi didn't do anything to squash the rumors in their own forums regarding re-dubs and new subtitles, I (and a lot of other fans) assumed that they were probably true

I like the dub as well, and was actually considering buying the new Funi sets if they were going to clean it up and fix the translation, but now there's no real reason I shouldn't just stick with the old CPM copies I have.
I was thinking about get the re-release but now I will hold out. I agree with everyone else in that they should try to get the fans that already have the CPM copies or any other copies a reason to purchase it. The only reason why I would purchase it is to help promote the series since it really is a good and classical one out there.
Thanks for letting us know about what Funi said. I know that when they changed the voices on DBZ that I stopped watching it because it gave some of the characters a different personality. Kinda like Amelia's first voice compared to her second one. It was two different Amelia's with the one from the second and third season being a whole lot better.
For the pricepoint, I wasn't expecting much beyond a repackaging of the CPM series. I'm just grateful to get it - especially since I entered the fandom after the CPM sets went out of print. For $40, I wasn't expected to be handed much more than what the CPM sets were and the subtitles aren't that bad. They're much, much better than ADV subtitles, which I want to hack through with a chainsaw. (And yes, if some of this sounds familiar I did make the same arguments in that thread

We're better off than the Sailormoon fans who don't have anything at all anymore.
I heard that. The whole SM situation pisses me off so much I can barely stand it. I don't understand Toei's reasoning (like they have any) for pulling all international licenses at all. I can only be so thankful that the first two seasons got uncut, subbed releases (not the ones they deserved, though), but the fact that the manga never got another chance (the PGSM rereleases too good for us?) and the fact that Stars never got a chance in the first place...I don't know what to say.
I think the recent Stars Amazon bootleg debacle, particularly the number of people who were actually buying the set, knowing it was a bootleg/dubless, and the crazy prices the OOP Mixx/Tokyopop manga sells for on eBay (I'd sell my complete set if I wasn't so attached to it and it wasn't falling apart) would clue Toei in that SM can still turn a good profit here, but I guess it's not enough.

The only reason I'm getting classic SM is that my boyfriend managed to snag both ADV sub sets before they went completely out of print. He's indicated that he might give them to me, which means I owe him my firstborn or two. ^_^
What was the Stars Amazon debacle? I've seen some fansubs floating around of Stars for sale, successors to VKLL it seems. My VHS Stars tapes are completely worn through. I also need to buy the re-release of the manga in Japanese. The new covers are all so very pretty. I wish it would be relicensed by a company that'd give it a good and proper translation - say Del Rey or Dark Horse, though Del Rey would be the more likely of the two given their relationship with Kodansha. It's amazing how SM is still so popular, yet they won't give it to us! I feel like watching my "R" movie DVD again...

I'd buy the first two season boxsets in a heartbeat if they were released again. That said, I wasn't completely happy with the releases when they were in print. Sub par audio and video quality, not to mention episode 67 was still nowhere to be seen. I know that most of this wasn't ADV's fault, but comparing the quality of the Japanese remastered R2s to ADV's boxsets is...well, they're incomparable.
Which is why, if I do end up buying season one and R on DVD, it'll either be Omegapin's fansubs of the remastered R2s, or the remastered R2s themselves (though at $36+ a pop that might be slow goings).
This was the Amazon debacle. Basically, Amazon was selling a bootleg Stars DVD boxset (not through the marketplace, but Amazon itself) labeled as the "Complete Official Boxset." When people discovered this and complained, it was then changed to the "Complete Bootleg Boxset" before finally being taken down a day or two later. Although I generally don't support the selling of bootlegs (why buy something for $30+ when you can get fansubs of

So Rezo will continue to be both Zel's grandfather and great-grandfather in R1 land (or, uh, R0 land if you're CPM). Still my favorite mistranslation ever.
Ah well. I'll probably still buy the first season and TRY sets since I never got around to buying them the first time. But unless they pull out all the stops for NEXT, I'm not rebuying. At least they're cheaper this time around.

I'll never understand it.
