The past five days; Winry couldn't say if they had flown or if they had gone by slowly. Every moment she stopped to think of all that had happened seemed to stop the dam the river of time and life would come to a crawl, reminding her of all the difficulties they had and were still facing. Beat, Winry, and Ling had all fallen from the ship when it had started to flood, and the only reason they were alive now was thanks to Beat and his airboard which they had been using to take up what they could of the 4423's storage to the upper deck. The ship had been falling dangerously fast, so it was understandable why Kambei would reason that they needed to open the hatches and let out all the water, but there was no way for him to tell that the three were still down there. It was a grave mistake, but an honest one.
When they woke up they were all in pretty awful condition, as was to be expected. Greed, who had awoken with Ling as the dominant entity was the least hurt thanks to his strange ability to shield his body. Winry had a concussion thanks to a hard blow she had taken while still on the ship, as well as a badly sprained leg. Beat had gotten the worst of it, with a dislocated arm and some broken ribs, but thanks to the Emergency Kit that Brook had given them, and Winry's doctoral backround, she and Ling had been able to help him back to his feet.
Even after they recovered, however, they hadn't gotten many breaks. They all had to work to the bone to create good solar stills to collect water, to gather up what they could from the fallen storage boxes, and of course: the monsters. The Badlands wasn't called such just for its poor and desert like nature. It was teeming with monsters and it was a credit to their stubborn nature that they were survivng them even in their roughed up states. Between Beat's physical brawn, Ling's skill and agility, and her magic they had been managing ok despite all.
On the second day they once they had gathered, hunted, and collected enough food and water they had set out towards the river, where they believed their ship had gone.
On the third day, they had seen an aircraft---one she was certain belonged to the 4423.
On the fourth day, trouble brewed.
It was subtle at first, but it was becoming more and more apparant, that Greed was resurfacing. It saddened and confused Winry. Last time he had appeared it was when she was confused, barely believing what was going on, and only getting a few chase words. In the last couple days she had been able to interact with Ling as they use to so many years ago, and it reminded her just how much she had cherished him as a friend. It almost got to the point that she forgot the situation---that Greed and Ling were in once sense, the same person, so of course both could not exist at the same time. The more and more she thought about it, the more and more conflicted she became. Ling was her friend.
But so was Greed.
She wasn't sure where along the way she had started to think of him as such. But whatever the case may be, he was stealing Ling's body, and so she would have to destroy that sword, and in all likelihood, him along with it. It would be hard, especially since Greed already suspected her of knowing too much, so Ling proposed the rather ludicrous idea of knocking him out, so that Greed would believe he only just came into consciousness. Well they had done it, to try and avoid any more trouble, and so now she and Beat were sitting together, guarding Ling's body from coming to any harm. Already there was a large, and rather fierce looking bird they had felled with some difficulty. Hopefully he would wake up soon, before any other monsters came.
As they did so, Winry explained the situation to Beat. Telling him of how she and Ling had met years ago, how he helped her during a rough time (though she kept it at that, not wanting to go into details of her family or past) and how they had parted soon before she left for the Badlands. She told him of her surprised when 'Greed' first appeared, and her confusion and hurt over his attitude towards her. About the first time that Ling popped out, and how she'd been trying to figure out how to help him. Now she knew, and she relented that information as well. It took a great weight off her shoulders to finally have someone else know, but the battle was far from over.
She sighed and stood up, stretching a little before turning her gaze in the direction they had seen the jet come from and leave to...if that had been one of their jets, then maybe, just maybe they would be getting some help soon.
With their luck, she doubted it.
