The attacks by the child experiments were affecting the fault line. Though they lacked the raw power of the satyrs' magic or Jormungandr, they were causing potentially dangerous quakes as they traveled southeast from Garrettstown.

Any rescued people here would either be victims of the landslides, or injured directly by the children themselves. The former will be harder to find.

The victims in Garrettstown have been injured by the child-experiments. They had a full range of injuries, from light grazing to severe injuries like limb-loss or fatal wounds. Getting them to the makeshift refugee basecamp outside of Garrettstown would require staying out of sight of the children. You never knew what they'd do if they spotted you.

BASE CAMP: MOUNTAINS tidesnpc April 21 2011, 06:09:56 UTC
It was a hike to the refugee camp. It had to be far enough away from the mountains to be out of danger from earthquakes. It was a bustle of activity: volunteers scurrying around carrying medical supplies to the hospital-tents, people with minor injuries doing what they could to help set up beds in other tents, and everyone else seemed to be on some kind of important errand. The only ones who were still were the injured. Those without beds in hospital tents sat on the ground outside them, nursing their wounds.

Out of sight of the city, word about the Garrettstown refugee camp spread through word of mouth.

It was bigger than the one in the mountains, much bigger. It also had a greater emphasis on providing shelter, rather than medical aid. It was still bustling and full of movement, though. Volunteers could help make food for the refugees, set up beds, bring medical supplies to the hospital tents, or comfort the frightened people. There were many jobs to do and not enough people to do them.

Hisoka slipped through town, collecting a group of teenagers on the way, and they all walked out to the refugee camp. He took a good look around. He decided that the best thing he could do was either help people get safely to the camp or collect supplies in Garrettstown to bring to the camp volunteers. But the organizers said that the little camps to the southeast were in far worse shape than this one was, as they were extremely short of food, clothing, tents, blankets, and medical supplies.

Outside the Garrettstown camp, to the east, there was a flat area that grew nothing but grass and scrub. It was already being used for a landing field by a number of aircraft. Hisoka borrowed a difference engine (his had been smashed in one of his fights), and left a message for Fox McCloud. Then he arranged for a supply wagon to meet them on the field ( ... )

For a moment, Fox had considered joining in all of the fighting. But there were plenty of people far more capable than he was for it. Assisting refugees was just as important, if not more so, and this was where he felt like he could make the biggest difference.

It hadn't taken long to reach the camp after noticing Hisoka's message--he was in the area, after all. His friend was waiting for him by the makeshift air strip.

"Of course," he replied in greeting. "Where do you need me?"

"In the air," answered Hisoka, with a smile. "Are you up for some mountain flying? We've got lots of supplies here, because the refugees have pretty well looted Garrettstown! - but there are a number of little camps further down the mountain chain where most people had to flee their towns without taking anything with them. So I thought we could cram the plane with whatever the camp organizers here can spare and fly it on down."

He turned and pointed to the wagon, which was heaped with boxes and bundles, and the two waiting wagoneers. "I'll start loading, and these two will help, if you want to refuel? They brought cans of gas, too."

There were several small, scattered groups of refugees. None had quite enough food, supplies or shelters, but they were doing their best with what they had. Injured people from monster attacks were trickling in, faster than the current volunteers could treat their wounds and set up beds for them.

Time passed. The Rahki River appeared, first as a shimmering thread, and then as a rocky-banked torrent, rushing out of a deep canyon. Fox and Hisoka crossed over it in Fox's swift aircraft, and soon saw a cluster of makeshift tents and ramshackle buildings on a plateau high above the water.

A small figure, black hair flying, ran out and flagged them to the landing area. Hisoka said, aloud, as they descended, "Say, she looks familiar-..." It was Neva Moran, one of the dockworkers from Abantiare.

She grinned at them as they touched down. "Mr. McCloud and Mr. Kurosaki!" she called.
