Zeetha was up on the deck, practicing with her new knives. She juggled them mostly, threw them high in the air and caught then, and then flicked them in showy looking patterns with the tips of her fingers. Yes, these were show knives, meant for entertaining. Decorated, flashy. She still needed time to get used to them, work with them until their weight and feel had worked their way into her finger memory. She was a long time from that sort of easy familiarity yet, but her fingers were telling her she was done for the day. She began to pack the knives up into their cloth carrying case, a long strip which could be rolled up with many places to tuck things ( ... )

Taiki's initial exploration of the ship had taken him all over. He was a little tired from all the walking, but he'd made a few friends and had even been given a big melon by the captain! He'd safely stowed it away in his cabin and, after taking a short break to rest his feet, he'd got up again to go back to the deck to see if Unicorn was still there.

To his disappointment, she wasn't. Even so, somebody else was up there instead. She was a slightly scary looking woman with extremely striking green hair who was juggling knives! Such a display amazed Taiki, but he made sure to keep well back until she'd started folding them all away. As he walked forward he realised that, despite the knives, she had a rather kind face. It put him at ease.

"I've never seen anybody do that with knives before," he said, standing back enough to be polite but also look a little bit... nervous. "Aren't you afraid of hurting yourself?"

"Of course," she replied. "If I weren't, that would be dangerous. However..."
She unrolled the bundle just enough to pull one out and hold it up. "These are trick knives. They're meant for the stage, see?"

She ran her thumb along the edge. You could still hurt yourself on it, but it was balanced to be used that way, and it was designed to look like it had an edge, but was not made for cutting. And it was, for lack of a better word, pretty looking.

"They'll still stick in balsa wood, they have some heft, but the edges aren't razor sharp. Doesn't mean you couldn't get yourself pretty good, but it's harder to nick a finger."

Taiki nodded, wincing as she ran her finger over the blade. She didn't know it, but his heart rate increased sharply as she did. It was a scary thing to see somebody do, especially when you had an aversion to blood so strong that simply the sight or smell of it sent you into a state of complete, body-wide numbness.

"You must be very brave," he pointed out, relaxing when she stopped touching the edge. "Where did you learn?"

He didn't realise that he could be seen as an annoying, over-curious child.
