This seems like a bad idea after all...

Kiros really couldn't put his finger on it why he was so anxious about just a silly spar with the boatswain, but he really felt a bit too anxious for his own good. After researching a bit about the samurai and their culture/beliefs; Kiros was more thankful they they were going to use wooden swords rather than the real deal! So even with the prospect of death out the way, why is it that the mechanic was a bit of a nervous wreck today? Well, for starters; it has something to do with all the rumors floating about how good the Lt.Commander's swordsmanship skills are.

Kiros isn't a swordsman since he prefers his twin katals[daggers] rather than using a single blade. Plus, most of Kiros' fighting style was a bit more physical and usually taking some bits of different kinds of Martial Arts rather tha focusing on one specific style. That could work for Kiros' advantage in this fight considering that Hijikata is probably rigid only in samurai swordsmanship but...

That also meant that the boatswain ( ... )

Hijikata turned when he heard Kiros approaching him, expression on his face as neutral as ever, save for the scowl. The boatswain wasn't really one for small talk, so he only grunted and let go of his own blade that was secured to his side. Seems like his metal sword would be drawn out another day. The dark-haired man then grabbed one of the two bokutos and tossed it towards the mechanic. "As you wish then." It was only courtesy to allow what the challenger wanted anyway; that was in his own code of honor.

Cigarette still smoking from his mouth (he never bothered to snuff it out until to dropped by itself or something), the boatswain stepped some distance away from Kiros, turning once there was an appropriate amount of space between them and stopping. He then readied his own bokuto, expression still the same before his eyes narrowed slightly and his free hand gestured for the mechanic to come to attack him first. He would let the man have the first blow - it would be more fair this way after all.

Catching the bokutos easily in his hand, he glanced over at Hijikata wondering what would be the BEST way to approach this daunting situation. No thanks to good ol' Ffamran who showed up bright and early for this match, seemingly interested in cheering him on during the spar. However, Kiros did wonder the extent of the navigator's good deed to show up for the match as a spectator but Kiros' didn't let his mind settle on such trivial matters. Instead, he twirled the bokuto a bit in his hand; just caluclating it's weight and speed first before catching a glimpse at Hijikata's faint beckon.

'No good, an offensive strike is never a good way to start off anything.' The mechanic thought to himself for a moment, his eyes scanning for any signs of a true opening against Hijikata. "Alright..." Kiros whispered out at first before claiming his smug attitude again. "Go easy on me, sir!" He last said before dashing right at Hijikata with the bokuto drawn and ready but his eyes still focused on the others movement rather than where the wooden ( ... )

He watched as Kiros did what he did, mind all but focused on the task at hand. Even if this was just a spar, Hijikata wasn't going to take it lightly. Even in a spar, his own skills and pride as a samurai was on the line, and he certainly wasn't going to lose out to a amateur like Kiros Seagill. The boatswain was silent, staying where he was then as the mechanic charged right at him, his bokuto swung wildly. Hijikata didn't even bat an eyelid as the grip on his own sword tightened and all too easily blocked the first strike with a clack of wood against wood.

The boatswain grunted as he chewed on the end of his cigarette before twisting the bokuto and grinding them away from each other, and then twisting sharping, grip tightening again as he bought the wooden blade into a swift lunge towards Kiros sword arm in an attempt to weaken his grip on his sword.

Ffamran had heard about the intended duel, and, truth be told was a little worried about Kiros. He ended up on the upper deck a little before the fight was scheduled, and made sure he stood in Kiros's corner, even if he thought it far more likely the boatswain would be the winner of the confrontation.

He gave a friendly wave to Kiros. "Good luck!"

"What's going on?"

Fran walked over to the navigator, looking between Kiros and the boatswain who was apparently obsessed with mayonaise (nasty stuff).

"Before we came to Kropmork, Kiros asked Commander Hijikata for a spar. They decided to go for wooden swords and, although I believe the Commander to have the advantage, I am here to show my support for Kiros."

Ffamran leaned back and watched the warm ups and preliminaries, pretty soon the fight would be on.

"Hmmm..." Fran studied the two men. Commander Hijikata did appear to have an advantage, but Kiros was agile and fast...

"They could both be equally matched," she decided, leaning against the railing as well.

As soon as Sawaki had heard about the fight, he'd rushed to retrieve a first aid kit as well as disinfectant and a sponge. He could not think of this as a good idea in any way shape or form, especially considering the temper of "Captain Mayo" as he was called among the enlisted men.

Still, he arrived on the deck out of breath and watched closely, fascinated but concerned by the duel. He wanted to cheer for Kiros but he was there as a doctor...

Mordred walked out onto the deck, looking around. So, here it was. Kiros versus Hijitaka. Personally, Mordred was rooting for Kiros. After all, he hadn't talked with the other man at all. Still, he wanted to watch. Though he wasn't a big fan of him having to fight someone, these were always entertaining.

Spotting Sawaki, Mordred walked over to him, nodding his head in acknowledgement. He looked the fight over. How long had it been going on? The length of a fight was a main determent in how it would end. "Who's winning?" he asked, looking at the doctor.
