In a perfect world, Edgeworth's arrival wouldn't have coincided with a very busy banquet. In a perfect world, Edgeworth would have been able to report directly to the captain himself. In a perfect world, said banquet wouldn't have forced him to take his paperwork to an infamously ill-tempered first mate.

This was not a perfect world.

So, with the ominous sense of foreboding usually reserved for men on the way to the gallows, Edgeworth approached the door and knocked three times.

Franziska looked up curious at the knock on her door - she had already seen to most of the crew, and certainly hadn't scheduled anything that day, not to mention she'd made sure the crew knew well and good not to simply drop by her office unannounced. Unless they wanted a whip to the face, of course.

She spoke, frowning habitually at the door. "Enter."

Hopefully, Bradley was able to inform Franziska of his presence here. In fact, Edgeworth was certain that he did. Bradley was, eccentricities aside, a professional man, and surely he knew how much Franziska hated surprises. Besides, as far as he know, he didn't do anything to earn Bradley's wrath.

So, without further ado, he opened the door and walked in. His stride was even and his posture was perfect, and as soon as he reached her desk, he greeted her with a prompt salute. Whatever their past relationship was, she was now his superior. He wouldn't forget that any time soon.

"Commander Miles Edgeworth, reporting for duty, ma'am."

Though the Captain had indeed informed her that Miles Edgeworth (that foolish bastard), Franziska had very solidly shoved it to the back of her mind. After the affair months past, the coward had faked suicide, left the sloppiest paper trail ever (that she had meticulously followed nevertheless), then had the gall to crawl out from under his rock and appear on her ship.

Franziska wasn't mad. She wasn't even enraged. She was simply seething with fury, kept barely in check by a calm outer shell that was necessary for her to preform her duties.

And then Miles Edgeworth walked into her office, announcing himself like it was nothing particularly special. He didn't even bother cowering properly. There were a thousand things she could have said to him, a hundred different ways she could have carved her anger into his back with the end of her whip; all would simply fall off him, as they had her whole life, and Franziska was sick of it. She was sick of being angry over one person all the time, sick of him always treating her anger like ( ... )
