Well, everyone seemed chipper, didn't they? Mal sighed, and opened up one of the crates ( ... )

"You're lookin' mighty nervous for a man with nothing to hide," he said. While it could've been just a leg, Mal had a few doubts about that. Mal walked forward, and let his boot rest just against Motorgut's calf.

"Now, I'm giving you one last chance - just why do you think the cops are here, Motorgut?"

"Alright, alright, I scan ya!" Motorgut said, wincing even from Mal's relatively gentle threat. "We got some old scrapheap military models we managed to salvage, they must be here for those. But they're so old and useless, I didn't think they'd even bother! We was just gonna break 'em down for parts!"

"And that's it? You aren't up to any funny business with those parts of yours?"

Mal didn't press with his foot, but he didn't take it away, either. First he wanted to make sure that Motorgut wasn't hiding anything else.

Motorgut was casting about frantically, squirming under Mal's boot.

"I swear on me gearbox and me circuit breaker, that's all." He made some arcane gestures over his chest, which was without doubt a Grinder sign for emphasis on that point. "Everything else was totally above board! Now lemme go!"

So he was being honest after all...or at least, he was being honest now. Mal was fully prepared to let him go, but first:

"And our payment?"
