"What do you mean pay? It's just a pied of bread! if you're worried about it so much, just charge it to the Fabre manor."
Oh my, trouble? Hughes was a nosy troll and couldn't help himself from coming over and poking his nose into things a bit.
"Can't say I blame him, friend. He makes his living by selling these pastries."

"What do you mean? Are you trying to say all he does with his life is sell bread all day? That's kind of lame."
Doubtless that last remark was going to go over well.

Oh dear. Hughes put a placating hand to the man, even picking up a pastry for himself and handing the man some coins. His words were to Luke, though. "Is it though? Without this man to make and sell bread many people would go without. He does quite a service for the people of this area, and hungry tourists like us that are passing through. And the money he makes selling his delicious wears he takes home so he can care for his family. It's the cycle of life for the poor." Hughes has little doubt the young man before him came from nobility. Only a noble would tell a peddler to put a charge on their house's tab.
((ooc: Yay for random NPC's =3;; ))

"Huh?" Luke shot this newcomer and inquisitive look. Sure, he was kind of annoyed at the moment, but it didn't mean he wasn't going to listen at all - especially when he was in a position such as this that he didn't think he could get out of on his own.
"I... Well, I guess," the noble finally ceded. But what did this have to do with him? His family had an income. He wasn't sure where it came from, but he and his mother certainly didn't work. Only Father stayed away for long periods of time for one military function or another. He still didn't really get it, but he supposed maybe everyone wasn't lucky enough to live in a manor with servants and cooks and all that. Lucky depending on how you looked at it, of course.
Then he muttered a half-apology under his breath, "Uh, yeah. Sorry." Sure sucked to be him, slaving away over hot bread all day long.

He was enjoying the sights, sounds, smells of the market when he heard voices around the corner - one angry, one almost more startled and confused than anything. And he thought he recognized the startled voice. Sigh . . . might as well go see what the trouble was.
Coming around the corner, he took in the scene at a glance. "Gentlemen, something I can help with?"

Even if the voice was something he'd heard before, the disguise was enough to fool him. Luke was easily fooled and hadn't taken much time to memorize who all he shared his mode of transportation with.
"Well, yeah, maybe!" Luke stumbled over his words just a little, not entirely sure of what to do, "This guy says I have to pay for food. I told him to just send a letter by the manor, but..."
Luke paused to make a face.
"I really don't get what the big deal is!"

. . . have to pay . . . send a letter to 'the manor' . . .
Yami couldn't help but stare at the young man for just an instant, but then it hit him. This guy's some kind of noble, isn't he? He probably doesn't know anything about buying and selling. He suppressed another sigh. "To him, it it a big deal. I'll explain in a minute." He turned to the vendor, reaching for a pouch. "What is the item and how much, sir?"
Reply
"Uh, right. So explain," the redhead prompted after he decided that the situation had started to take a more favorable turn.

...what was going on over there, exactly...?
Oh dear, that was that one young man, wasn't it. And he was... did he even know he had to pay for that?
Oh dear. Well, she figured that the right thing to do would be to step in, so...
"Excuse me, sir...?" said Hinamori, looking somewhat worried.

Oh, it was her.
Luke was quickly getting sick of this mess. If he had known that obtaining food and a few other things was going to be this difficult, he would have just said 'forget it' and spent his time searching for a nice private bath.
"Yeah, what is it?"
Reply
"How much is it, sir?" she asked the seller while doing so.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. This guy was getting annoying. The redhead dug around in a shallow pant pocket and finally produced a few francs. It hardly seemed like enough to be worth anything.
"Don't bother," Luke muttered, stepping forward and shoving the money in the seller's direction. Anything to make him shut up and get off Luke's back.
"Just take it. If I had known that bread was going to give me this much trouble I wouldn't have bothered." Luke still didn't quite get it, but it was a start.
