It was still early enough in the day when Orihime climbed out of Seta-kun's plane, joints snapping as she could finally move, that she could go straight to her purpose. When she saw Ichigo waiting for her on the deck, she knew that nothing she could tell him was going to comfort him, and would only make him worry more.
Not as if he was going to need comfort, in any case. He and the rest of the ship were going to get the children back, she knew it: Ichigo's plans always worked out, and the Winding Way sounded like it had a lot of strong or smart people to believe in their friends. And now that she was here, she could hopefully bring back one of their leaders.
Hopefully. Pendragon's advice to "keep your expectations reasonable" had been bothering her the entire time. She didn't know how long it had been since the attack on their ship, or just how long it took for the soul to leave the body and start becoming something else. What if he'd started to turn into a Hollow by now? They might have to exorcise him, and even fighting him from behind like they'd done before wouldn't make Ichigo able to separate the ghost from the man they knew.
So her only words for Ichigo after the widest-armed hug she'd ever given in her life were "Where's Mr. Hughes?" She didn't want to keep him hanging on if he was still in there.
