Reno had dealt with chocobos before, though only as getaway animals. Nonetheless, he could steer one. So, he went up to the podium.

"Nevada Vega," he announced. Again, aliases. Always good.

Well, that sure was hell of an interesting prospect. Pip had ridden a couple of Chocobos before, though his prospect with them usually were not the best. The last chocobo he had tried to ride on only ended up kicking him hard on the groin.

Needless to say, he hadn't ridden one since then.

"...Pip Bernadette," the mercneary said with something of an awkward smile. Just how did he get himself into this again...?

Now THIS was the sort of fun Maxim hadn't had in ages. It had been years since he'd seen a race like this. Just getting to watch and bet was exciting enough for him. Then, when it was announced that anyone could enter Maxim practically vaulted over the seats on his sprint up to the podium. He'd spent a couple hundred years in the saddle as a cavalry officer. Horses were his specialty but he'd ridden just about every other kind of beast of burden one could think of, and then some.

Hopping up onto the podium with as much enthusiasm as he could manage, Maxim gave the first person he saw a huge, fang-y grin. "Maxim iz here to vin de race!"

Gambling wasn't really Utena's thing... but competitions were right up her alley. So, when she'd head there was a race for amateurs going on, she came down off the ship in short order to go try her hand.

She had absolutely no experience with chocobos... but then, that hadn't stopped her from trying a lot of things. Like live-steel dueling. So, she made her way to the podium with the rest of the contestants, some of whom she thought she'd seen glimpses of on the 4423. "Utena Tenjou."

Watching from the crowds, the white-clad samurai sat in the stands looking mildly interested in today's events. He was not sure as to why some of his fellow colleagues decided to join this amateur race but at least it's amusing to see Reno, out of all people, climbing upon the back of a dusty golden chocobo. Kambei never really shown appreciation for such sport but after growing a tad restless upon the ship, the samurai opted to spend his day outside here in Doma.

"I wonder if he will win..." He mumbled to himself as he stroked his beard in thought.

"Wonder if who will win?"

Penelo had decided to go down to the races just to watch. Gambling wasn't her thing, and besides she had too many good luck charms for that to be really fair. Seeing Kambei out and about was surprising, however.

And so was seeing the elusive redheaded pilot. Wow, gambling brought out the hermits, huh?

Souji was bound and determined to get out of the ship for awhile. He'd spent most of their time in Colvus in bed, and that hadn't been entertaining at all. He'd never spent much time in the Badlands--he and Hijikata had bypassed it completely when they'd moved from Ivona to Vohemar--and he wanted to see what it was like. He wasn't really a gambler--he'd placed his bet on a whim--but he wanted to see what the races were all about, and the amateur event seemed like it was bound to be fun. Surveying the stands, it didn't take him long to spot Kambei's white-clad figure, and then Penelo's more diminutive one. He waved, and then scrambled up to where they were sitting, demonstrating considerably more energy than he had in awhile.

"Hello!" he called cheerfully when he reached them. "This looks fun, doesn't it? I think I saw Mister Bernadette and Reno down there."

Well, this was bound to be a spectacle. Hijikata didn't know much about chocobos or racing them, but he could figure about enough that if he'd placed any bets today, they would have been on the riders and not the birds. Two injuries, and universal humiliation... that sounded like a safe bet ( ... )
