Ooooh food dye, I hadn't even thought of that!! What a fantastic idea, I've been wasting all this paint when all I need is a little drop and lots of water :P
So do you brush it on or let it just sink in or what?
I use whatever paper I have lying around - I kind of collect scrap paper. Old envelopes, old spineless books, wrapping paper, whatever works! In this case though it was some paper from an old art book I had that I bought at some cheap dollar store. Kind of thickish paper but even still, it managed to soak through it so it's good to have something underneath! In the past I've also used thick (used) A4 envelopes I've pinched from work. Working in administration has it perks sometimes ;) Besides printer paper can get expensive and I am all about the lo-fi!
For this, I wet the paper first with a fine mist of water from a spray bottle and then dropped on some dye. It makes lovely pattens if the paper is wet just enough. Once it had dried I misted over it again a little, which made the spots. You can see in the middle where I went a little overboard and it all kind of ran together. But it's easy as pie to do and cheap as chips to make so if it all goes horribly wrong I'll grab a new scrap and start again!
