Did you ever try playing without any custom content and mods? Start playing game this way for a while and figure out whether your problem in CC or in graphic application.
Sorry to say but it's overheating. I've had exactly the same setup and all my games worked fine. After a year the quality rapidly declined and everything became unplayable. Even Windows refused to work. It's an issue with integrated graphics in general, nowadays laptops get dedicated cards and integrated graphics, it lessens the strain. Do you have a MacBook from 2007? It was a faulty series - mine works still, but only for internet browsing.
Mine is from January 2009. Does that mean I should play my game less frequently? or get a peripheral fan or something? or should I abandon hope? I deleted a bunch of unsupported clothes and the problem has gone away-- although I also haven't left residential lots, since the problem always begins on a community lot.
Hopefully it was CC issue. I dunno about the 2009 series, maybe they aren't as prone to overheating, but the GMA X3100 makes my warning bells go off :P . The safest way would be to invest in a cooling pad and play for a shorter time (play 1 hour, let it rest) with less CC. If your laptop doesn't get cracks on the case, than you'll be fine xD .

I know jack about Mac. Is it possible that it might be a heating issue? Or graphics drivers of some kind? Settings?

Overheating could cause an issue like this? How should I test that theory?
