Be aware that SurveyMonkey sends IP addresses along with the results and that the results are sent by email to the survey owner. That means if you answer from home, or your wireless laptop card, or anywhere identifying; your answers can be traced back to you. It also means that the information is not encrypted and no promise of privacy can be sustained.

In other words, "It might look like an anonymous survey, but don't count on it." Especially if your job or family or friends or life depends on it.

Good point, thanks for sharing. The research in this case is governed by the rules of the university and those are available on request, so you can find out exactly how anonymous it is or isn't.

On the consent form, it actually reminds users that their internet transactions can be monitored by the provider (like their work or a library) and so the stuff isn't anonymous from that end, either. I did this from home, and the questions are nothing I would consider private or traumatic, but everyone's feel for that would differ.

Most people do not know that hidden information is sent along with the survey. I used SurveyMonkey and was shocked by the stuff people would admit to while thinking it was anonymous.
