Day 5!

Jun 29, 2012 22:19

From
ysabetwordsmith: In 97 AD, Chinese General Pan Chao sent an embassy to the Roman empire, but little came of it. Suppose China and Italy had united, how would that change things?

The Chinese and Italians traded more
than pasta and fortunes,
rice and vegetables. They bargained
for more than bolts of cloth,
and yards of silk.

They stole words,
slipped in turns of phrase
not native to the other's tongue,
and they sent grooms and brides
across lines. They walked
over and through the Wall,
built a copy of Piza
in the Ancient Beijing.

They maintained this friendship
in age after age,
China opening trade routes
earlier in the West
by way of the Mediterranean,
and Italy moving into the rich
waterways of the Southeast.

Mussolini still came to Power,
years down the line, but Italy
was Communist, and allied to
the allies, an important
route in the secret runs
from France
and Spain,
and everywhere,

an important turning point
to the war.
