magnesium also burns really hot. if you want to make something like a magnesium flare you can buy a magnesium camp lighter (it's a block of magnesium with a black strip on it, if you drag a knife quickly across the strip it'll spark) anyways, just keep slicing off tiny chips and ribbons and such of it with a knife and put it all in a tissue, add a fuse in with it and tie up the top of the tissue making like a little baggy. light the fuse and toss lightly.
