------------------

Blades of grass crunched under her feet as she made her way through the maze of tombstones, ominously glowing in the morning light. Normally on her way to meet with the other members of Team Gai at this time, Tenten found herself with the entire day off when they decidedly took separate missions without her. The details weren’t clear or necessary because all information concerning assignments were to remain confidential regardless, but she was left out all the same. It was just as well, the kunoichi had other matters to contend with; things she would rather not share the rest of her squad.

Somethings are best done alone, the weapon goddess thought solemnly to herself, clutching to the small bundle of flowers in her hand.

Having years of practice, she walked the familiar path to three rather plain stone slabs amid the forest of concrete memories housing the lifeless souls of all who had cross the eternal divide. Dawn had just arrived bringing with it the soft glow of the rising sun over the horizon, casting long shadows over the cemetery as if to bring life to the long forgotten spirits resting beneath her feet. The quiet that had always settled there was both unnerving and calming, working to both alert her shinobi senses as well as bring ease to her solitude.

Four years; that was how long it had been since her father had been found dead on the floors of Takeru’s Weapon Shop, ultimately joining her mother and brother on the other side of the great beyond. From what the medic-nins could tell of his body, they had told her that there had been no pain when Shirou passed into the next world. Tenten could be assured and content with believing in that even though the better part of her thought otherwise. But what had affected the kunoichi most was the fact that her beloved father had been forced to die alone while she had been gone on a mission with her team. I should have been there.

But it was useless to dwell on the past; such things could not be changed and to hold on to fruitless grudges would only taint her future. So with a quiet sigh and solemn smile, Tenten knelt down beside the graves and methodically worked to brush away the dirt that had gathered on them so that the white roses she had brought would shine their brightest amid the dreary grey of the stones.

“It‘s been a while, hasn’t it?” the kunoichi inquired as cheerfully as she could, knowing that there would be no answer but still finding comfort in asking all the same, “How are you guys doing today?”
