"We're very sorry for your loss."

She came home from the hospital, shed her jacket, shirt and jeans and immediately climbed into bed. He took the time to call Veronica and tell her what happened, then unplugged the phone and climbed in after her. He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her tightly against his chest.

He snuck back into the kitchen after she dozed off and drank a bottle of scotch. He made sure to brush his teeth before he went back to bed.

"Mac? It's your mother. Call me back A.S.A.P."

The first few days sort of reminded him of their honeymoon. At least in that they spent a lot of time in bed.

The day after they came back from the hospital, Veronica took it upon herself to move into their living room. She plugged the phone back in and checked the messages (six from Mac's mom, three from Parker, two from Veronica herself).

The day after that, Dick heard people start to come over. Veronica would always tell them politely that he and Mac "weren't around" or that they "weren't ready for visitors" and they'd always leave their condolences, and probably food of some sort, before taking their leave. He came back out that night after Mac had fallen asleep and Veronica microwaved him a plate of hash brown casserole that Mac's mom had left.

She asked him if Mac had eaten yet. She hadn't done much other than cry and get up to take a piss.

He'd done some crying too, but he didn't mention it.

"I brought this pie... I don't know why. It's stupid. Here. Tell Mac I said 'hi'."

On the fourth day, he woke up to find himself alone. He wiped his eyes and looked around - she was no where around. But the room looked like it had been torn apart by some sort of vicious animal - this was a good sign. She'd changed clothes at least.

He changed and brushed his teeth before going back out into the living room to see Mac sitting at the bar in the kitchen with a bowl of apple pie.

"You want some?" she asked. "It's really good. I think Parker brought it by. It definitely looks like her handiwork."

He looked around.

"Veronica left," she added conversationally. "I told her to."

"Okay," he nodded and sat down next to her. He brushed her hair away from her face and she smiled serenely.

"Let's not do that again," she said. "Please?" He caught sight of a tear in the corner of her eye.

He had a feeling he knew what she was asking, but he decided not to get into the logistics right then and there.

"Dick? I think my water just broke."

They didn't hold a funeral. Mac said it was stupid to hold a funeral for someone who didn't even exist in the first place.

The corpse (Dick hated that word - but Mac used it all the time) was cremated and Mac gave the tiny urn to him and told him to "get rid of them".

He had doubts about his ability to paddle out with an urn under his arm, so he walked out to the end of the pier and scattered them from there.

Logan was by his car when he got back.

"Did you do it?" Logan asked. Dick nodded. Logan sighed. "What was his name?"

Dick inhaled deeply. Smelling the salty air that his son would never be able to.

"Caleb."

"Well, I guess I'll have to cancel my subscription to Childfree Weekly, then..."

The day his daughter was born, Veronica Mars hugged Dick Casablancas for the first time in her life.

"What are you going to name her?" she asked him, giving him a teary smile.

Like he had any control over naming the kid.

"Please, if I let him name her, her name would probably be Dickerina." Dick turned at the voice of his wife to see her standing at the window, her eyes searching the pink cribs.

She had a point.

"You're not supposed to be out of bed," he reminded her with a frown.

"I wanted to see her," Mac said softly, finally finding the baby she was looking for. A relieved smile came over her face as she touched the glass. She sighed contentedly. "Hi, baby."

He wrapped his arms around her and leaned his chin against her shoulder. He pressed a kiss against her neck.

"What's her name?"

Her smile didn't fade as she watched their daughter wriggle in her crib.

"Aviva."
