This is my first attempt at making icons. #9 is the one that won third place. I'm not entirely happy with all of these but I've posted them anyway.

Personally I like no. 8 best.

You shouldn't feel bad about them. As with everything else, with practice you get better.

I like 8, t00 - I considered submitting it for the challenge but then went for # 7 instead :D
