The position of Chief Executive Officer of the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board was literally created for Joe Conti, and even though he's retiring this February, he'll still be allowed to return to the post on an 'emergency' basis...with his salary being $80.16 per hour ( Read more... )

HOLY F**K!!!!

How the hell does he (or his crony friends) justify an $80 per hour salary!? Sitting on a liquor control board (whatever that is) can't possibly be so difficult and specialized that you need to pay that much to whoever is doing it!!
Cops and soldiers make less than that. And they have have to dodge bullets while on the job!!

It's actually very low for a CEO. Your typical CEO makes on average $5200/hour.

Except we're not talking about CEO of a corporation. This is a bureaucratic position within a state government. Not to mention the position was somehow created for him. Literally. It didn't exist before he had the job. If it's unnecessary, scrap it!

Not in the case of a government sweetheart position created just so some asshat could give his buddy a cushy job. Private sector CEOs get paid a lot because, for the most part, they have specialized skills and earned their position. I'm pretty sure a monkey could do the job of the guy in this story.

Ah, so Corbett still wants to privatize liquor stores in PA. I thought I saw something in passing some months back on the Pittsburgh Trib website, but I thought it might have already died a quiet death. There's going to have to be some changes at the very least. Are the liquor stores still closed on Sundays?

That is one nice thing about living just over the state line in New York. If we decide we want a bottle of wine on a Sunday we can just go to a privately owned store in town that makes a person dizzy with all the wine choices. And they have plenty of New York wines as well. It was something we couldn't do when we lived in western PA. At least the Lake Erie wineries are open on Sundays. Meanwhile, we can buy beer with our groceries. There's actually been debate about being able to sell wine in grocery stores, but nothing has come of it.

I wonder what the LCB classes as an "emergency?"

You guys can't get booze in the grocery store? I thought that was only a rule in states with heavy Mormon populations like Washington and Utah. O_o

A beer shortage on either New Years Eve or Superbowl Sunday? LOL

We can buy beer and hard cider in the grocery store, along with those wine cooler type drinks. Can't get hard liquor or wine though.
