In Progress: Art for Haiti Relief

This is the first of (probably) many sketches of the painting I initially talked about here.

I've collected many ideas, and I appreciate them all. I plan on integrating many, if not all, of them. Please, suggest more! I still invite you to suggest something to appear in the picture--a plant, animal, other object, mythic or historic figure. The image ( Read more... )

Oooh, I like the pregnant belly/globe idea! Very cool. I'm anxious to see it as it becomes its final form. Exciting! :)

I love the coconut heart and the belly globe! I look forward to seeing what else people suggest. I'm going to link to this page.

I'm glad I could help. I'm really tickled that you excerpted my description when you made the post to crowdfunding too!

A donation will be forthcoming. I'd like to suggest mangoes and coffee, Haiti's leading exports. (I love mangoes!) One of the most popular foods in the world is rice and beans in one combo or another and it is the most popular basic food in Haiti as well...I think that should come into play for sure.

Those are good ideas!

I love mangoes. I have discovered that canned mango puree makes decent ice cream and magnificent ham glaze. To get magnificent ice cream requires butchering live struggling mango fruits.

I don't care for the taste of coffee, but I enjoy the smell of it.

Among my partner's favorite foods is red beans and rice.

I hadn't thought of the food aspects; these are really nifty. We have a couple of Afro-Caribbean and Caribbean cookbooks in our collection, since we like ethnic foods.

I'm with you on the coffee.
I particularly like the idea of rice and beans featuring, since it's such a popular dish the world over as well as in Haiti...unity through food. :)

Hey, you could make a whole social movement out of that! Unity Through Food. Throw a potluck representing as many different cultures as possible, and have people trade recipes.

Total lunatic here; maybe you could put a thin crescent Moon gazing down upon the heart of the tree?

PS: Embarrassingly small donation made, but if 'everyone' made an embarrassingly small donation, we could raise a sizable amount...

I'm sorry I haven't gotten back to you (strange things have been going on with my comment notifications), but I did receive your donation. Thank you!

A crescent moon? Is there a particular symbolism in mind?

New Moons always symbolize new beginnings. New Moons are often seen in the day time, sharing the same space as the Sun. There is a Cherokee story about the Moon being the Sun's lover, but being so timid that when she had to share the same sky space with him, she would make herself so thin as to almost seem invisible. I just thought the newness fit in with the theme, as does balance (between night --the Moon -- and day).
