I like!!!

I also like that you are reading bell hooks.

It's also good to see you making more empowered art work.

Thanks!

"Talking Back" is the first book of hers I have read. I am just beginning the third chapter but already I want to read more. Her writing helps me realize my own strength, and that it lies in, among other things, the words I speak and write and the images I make.

If you're interested in teaching, you should read "Teaching to Transgress," too. I have another of hers about art, hope to have time to start it soon!

I have "Teaching to Transgress" on on my Amazon wishlist. What is the other one called?

Love this. It expresses & is about expression. Super-elegantly composed. It has a timely emotion for me personally, as well, since I'm dealing with anxiety over expressing myself ... : ) thanks for showing this

You're quite welcome! Why does expressing yourself make you anxious? For me, the anxiety comes when I fail to express myself, when I try to silence my voice.

One aspect of my childhood home was a constant, massive atmosphere of criticism, negative judgment, disapproval. I swam in it; and then took on the job of always criticizing and disapproving of myself. As a supposed grown up these days, I am very conscious to try my best to not punish myself that way; it is an ongoing project. I have a button in me that is set to "beat 'em to the punch by putting myself down first". The trouble I have is feeling like if I open my mouth, I'm going to get judged poorly, period. I also have an "oh, no" feeling after I've expressed myself verbally. It passes very, very quickly these days. You are absolutely correct; failing to express myself has become the far more painful place to be. Thanks for the question : )
Forgot to say, the anxiety is because I am taking a lot more risks verbally lately

Same here about the childhood. I love the art, it is also reminiscent of a Tori Amos song, "sometimes I hear my voice and it's been here, silent all these years" Or maybe that's just me.
