Chapter 6
Ohno thought it was cute - the way Nino’s face had reddened obviously while they had been talking about Sho lately. Nino had looked troubled, and definitely Nino must’ve wanted nothing but to stop talking about that topic right away and also just never mentioned again. Ohno wasn’t curious, it was okay for him that Nino liked someone - it would be weird if he never liked anyone specially, right? But he just had an urge to find out whether it was true or - if Nino really liked Sho, if Nino and Sho even were together. Did Sho know anything? And... was Nino serious about this feeling?
Ohno had to admit that it felt sad somehow, when he thought about Nino and Sho being together. It was definitely not a good feeling - he should haven’t had that kind of feeling in the first place. He should’ve been happy for his little brother, right? He always hoped that there would be someone who could enter Nino’s heart and made the other boy happy, and if Sho could do it, it was…should’ve been still fine.
However, deep down in his heart, he secretly hoped that he could be that someone someday.
Certainly it was hard to come true because, well, because Nino didn’t like him much, right?
The urge to know about Sho and Nino was getting stronger each day passed. So one day, while they were sharing the food being prepared by their mom, and while Nino was complaining again - how hot the weather was for a spring day, how tired he was after practicing guitar, how ached his muscles were after training for the baseball club - Ohno couldn’t stop himself asking the question which had always been staying in his head for the past few days.
“Sakurai’s a nice boy, right?” He said, and Nino immediately stopped talking altogether. Ohno titled his head to look at Nino, and he saw the boy’s face stiffened, in a threatening way, just like he Nino was telling him don’t you dare to continue asking. But Ohno knew Nino was being shy again. Nino’s way of shyness was funny, and was so cute that it was hard for Ohno to restrain himself from teasing Nino sometimes. He wiped the sweat from his forehead and laid down lazily beside Nino whose eyes kept staring at him and a hint of annoyance was showing on his face.
“What do you mean?” After a long time, Nino finally replied. And Ohno rolled to his side so he was looking straightly at Nino’s face. He smiled, but this time, his smile somehow was stiff and unnatural, like it wasn’t meant to be there but was forced and it was uncomfortable. When Nino glared at him again, that smile vanished as if it had never existed.
“I just think,” Ohno said slowly, carefully, studied Nino’s face. If Nino was getting mad at him, he would stop. He would never want to play with fire. He was still living under the same roof with Nino, after all. “That, you know, he’s nice. And it’s so natural to like him.”
Nino kept silence for a while before shrugging.
“You’re right,” Nino chucked “Dozen of girls like him. But so bad, he’s gay. I’ve never seen him with a girl. But boys? Oh yes.”
“You sound like you hate him a lot,” Ohno blinked. Usually, Nino wouldn’t be that harsh.
“Why should I like him?” Nino snapped. Nino looked away from his eyes, and somehow he seemed angry and defensive. Ohno bit his lips sheepishly.
“I think… I thought you liked him.” He admitted. The way Nino rolled his eyes told Ohno enough, and he had to supress a strange lightness inside his chest that it seemed like it had been tightened there for a while. It was weird, right? It was weird to feel this happy knowing that Nino didn’t like Sho - but it was natural for sure, Ohno convinced himself. Because...
“No!” Nino couldn’t help but groan “Hell, I told you that No, Never, how could I even…”
“Don’t curse,” Ohno reminded him sternly, and Nino just shrugged. “So, you really don’t…”
“For another thousand years,” Nino laughed and laid down beside him. Their bodies were close enough that Ohno could feel the heat radiating from Nino’s, and he suddenly wanted to scoot closer just to feel how it would be like if he could touch that skin. But of course he knew better than that, so he just stayed where he was and stared at the ceiling. Nino was doing the same, but Nino suddenly asked, his voice was small as if he didn’t actually dare to ask, but the question came anyway.
“Why did you ask me that?”
“Huh?” Ohno replied absent-mindedly. From here he could smell Nino’s scent, which smelled like sweat and sweet and just so like Nino, and he was distracted by the way it kept lingering near his nose. He had to take a deep breath to pull himself back.
“You know,” Nino continued, uncomfortable, and Ohno turned his head to look at Nino. Nino’s red ears could be seen from here, and the way he stumbled over his words were so cute that Ohno wanted - so wanted to kiss away that nervousness on his lips, and … “I’m wondering… that, do you like Sakurai?”
“Hm…” Ohno didn’t reply awhile, and Nino waited patiently. The silence fell between them, but it wasn’t awkward - at least Ohno felt so. Nino just kept staring at the ceiling as if the answer he wanted to know was written on it, and Ohno just stared at Nino and thought about Nino’s question. Did it mean Nino didn’t want him to like Sho? Ohno almost chuckled. It was impossible, because Nino had no reason to feel like that. Although their relationship now was better than the first time they met, Ohno could’ve never thought that he would be that important for Nino to feel that way. Ohno thought it would be nice if Nino really didn’t want him to like Sho, though… because maybe, then, he would have a chance to make a move.
“I like Nino more,” Ohno said finally, and Nino looked at Ohno, surprised, also his cheeks reddened obviously and he couldn’t stop his grin. Ohno grinned, too. Because he really meant it. He liked Nino, he liked the way Nino could warm his heart just with his presence beside him. And Ohno reached out his hand to take Nino’s in his, slowly, as if he gave Nino time to pull away if Nino didn’t like. However Nino didn’t, and Ohno linked their hands together. He could feel Nino tightened his hold, and for a while, none of them said anything.
“Does that mean…” Nino started, but never finished it. Ohno waited for Nino to continue, but the other boy had shut his mouth and Ohno had to ask. Because Nino sounded scared. Hopeful. Even wanted to pick up the invisible line between them. Ohno’s hand squeezed.
“… Mean what?”
“I like you more, too,” Nino admitted. And then he hurriedly added, his face was red and Ohno thought he was really, really cute. Nearly too attractive. And Ohno had to use all his wild-control to keep himself in place, not to reach out and just traced the line of Nino’s face gently, to feel how it would be like under his touch… “I mean, than Sho and… Masaki, and…”
“I like Nino more than anyone else,” Ohno grinned, and Nino’s shy grin was priceless that Ohno thought he could say those words for the rest of his life just to see that grin again and again. “I like Nino the best.”
“Really?” Nino ducked his head and before Ohno realized it, Nino’s face was so close to his shoulder and Nino’s breath warmed his skin. He shuddered. Their linked hand stayed between them, Nino was laying on his side to face Ohno, and suddenly everything seemed so surreal, even Nino beside him seemed bizarre, and Ohno felt dizzy. He turned to his side too, so now he was face to face with Nino, and he didn’t stop himself from leaning in. Nino’s hand tightened.
“But, I…” Nino closed his eyes, and for the first time after those time together, Ohno saw a real fear on Nino’s face. Something that Nino was trying to hold back. Something that Nino didn’t dare to say. “We’re brothers.”
“I know,” Ohno said. “But how does it matter?”
“It does,” Nino breathed “At least, for me, because…”
“I like Nino the best because Nino’s my brother,” Ohno said gently, carefully. At that moment, he felt Nino stiffened. Nino opened his eyes and slowly backed away, his hand left Ohno’s in a second. He stared at Ohno, something was broken inside his eyes and until then Ohno didn’t realize he had just said something really stupid. Something definitely had hurt Nino, because Nino’s lips tightened into a thin line and Nino sat up abruptly, not looking at Ohno any longer. “Nino?”
“Right,” Nino just shrugged and avoided Ohno’s eyes. He looked angry, but somehow Ohno didn’t feel like that anger was dedicated to him, but more to Nino himself. Nino stood up and cleaned the dish, and didn’t once look back at Ohno, who was still sitting in confusion.
“If you like me because I’m your brother and you just have to like me,” Nino said, his voice was shaking, and Ohno guessed that he had made a terrible mistake. “You don’t have to.”
Maybe Nino was waiting for something? Maybe Nino was waiting for him to say...? But did Nino feel the same? No, it wasn’t possible, was it? It must’ve been something else - and... After all, Ohno didn’t dare to say anything.
“Nino, I…” But Nino walked past him and was about to get out of the room. Nino didn’t look at him when he said.
“Don’t say anything when you don’t mean it.”
And Nino went out, the door slammed shut, left Ohno unable to utter a word. He swallowed the lump in his throat hardly. He had never meant it this way. He didn’t know - he couldn’t read Nino, he didn’t know if it was safe to just tell Nino about his real feelings. He had chosen the safer way - to just admit that he liked Nino because Nino was his brother, but he knew better than that. He knew his feelings, the uncontrollable feelings for Nino had grown up inside him and he had no way to supress it, he knew it wasn’t brother-like. But he didn’t know if Nino wanted the same thing. He could’ve never known, because Nino was hard to read, and Nino even had said that he hated him. But now Nino’s reaction really confused him...
For a long while after Nino had left, Ohno stood there motionlessly, staring at the door as those thoughts whirled in his mind.
