Chapter 20: Kisses
“I told you, it’s just a kiss!!!!” Jun said desperately. He scratched his head frustratedly when Sho and Aiba stared at him as if it was the first time they saw him. It was irritating. Jun was going to snap again if Sho didn’t open his mouth to stutter in utter shock.
“You kissed him!!!” It wasn’t a question but sounded like an accusation. Jun felt the need to defend himself, so he rose from his seat and walked around the room impatiently.
“Listen, it’s just a kiss, okay?? It’s nothing to make such a big deal!! Stop staring at me like that!!!” He snapped at Aiba, whose widen eyes refused to leave Jun’s face, his mouth hanging open. Jun hated it when Aiba had that kind of expression, it made him feel like he had done something unforgivable.
“But… but…” Aiba stuttered, he seemed lose all his ability to talk properly “But…”
“Arg!! I shouldn’t have told you!!! I knew you’d react like this!!!” Jun huffed in annoyance.
“But… aren’t you… in love with Ohchan, Jun?” Aiba asked, his mouth was still opened slightly but he immediately closed it when he saw Jun’s glare.
“Of course I was!!” Jun exclaimed, feeling hollow out of sudden “But I gave up, okay? Don’t you see… that Satoshi and Nino are really happy together?”
“But… Ninomiya?” Sho asked hesitantly, tried to hide his frown on his face but Jun could see the look Sho was giving him, and it pissed him off out of sudden.
“You make him sound like a disease,” Jun retorted, his voice was harsh and defensive. Sho was taken aback with Jun’s anger. He shook his head.
“No, I just… I don’t understand. Isn’t he, well, the one who hurt Nino all the time?”
“He had his reasons for that!” Jun hissed. No one really knew Ninomiya’s feeling, and they had no right to judge him. “It’s not like he’s a bad guy, Sho! He’s lonely, and he needs someone who cares about him.”
Aiba and Sho went silence as they stared at Jun again. Tireness suddenly swept over Jun, as he felt the need to bury his face onto his dear pillow and took a good sleep, rather than sitting here and confronting his friends. But he had to. He needed to say it. Because even Jun himself hadn’t had the gut to accept it. But he knew. He knew clearly what he wanted.
“I want to be that someone, guys.” He whispered, his eyes kept still on his hands, didn’t dare to look up to see what kind of expression his friends had on their face. He didn’t want to deny it anymore. It was far from what he called ‘love’, but it was close with what he called ‘affection’. He didn’t know where things would lead him to from now on, but he didn’t want to run away. Not this time.
“I see,” It was Aiba who spoke first and Jun looked up to see a bright grin on his friend’s face. He was still confused when Aiba stood up, looked cheerful as he always was. Jun had never found himself love Aiba more than now when Aiba grinned and put an arm around his shoulder. “I’m always on your side, Jun-chan.” Aiba said with a coaxing voice. The heaviness which had been pressing against Jun’s chest was suddenly lifted up when Aiba continued.
“I don’t know if he’s a good guy, I don’t know if he derserves you or not,” Aiba smiled “But I trust you. You won’t choose the wrong person.”
And with that, Aiba hugged Jun tightly. A wave of complicate emotions rushed oved him, and Jun for the first time hugged Aiba back without complaining. Sho watched them with an unreadable emotions on his face, but when Jun turned to him, he could say he saw the understanding in Sho’s eyes.
“I don’t know why it’s him, Sho,” Jun said, a troubled smile on his face “I don’t know why it’s Ninomiya… But, I want to get close to him. I want to… understand more about him.”
“If that’s what you say,” Sho began. He let out a long exhale before continued “… To be honest, I don’t know why I love Masaki either.”
“Oi!” Aiba protested, but a grin appeared on his face. Jun found himself smile genuinely at his two friends. The grey clouds in his heart were washed away slowly, and with Sho’s smile when he continued, Jun knew he couldn’t wish for better friends than them.
“Good luck with him, though,” Sho chuckled “He’s definitely hard to deal with.”
“Yes, absolutely,” Jun frowned a little when he remembered what happened after the kiss. It was nothing near to romantic as they always saw in drama, because Ninomiya was an unbelievably stubborn brat.
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH ME????” Ninomiya shouted, his tone raised to maximum when Jun broke the shortest kiss he had ever made and pulled away in utter scare that the guards would rush into the room and claimed him as robber and took him to the police. He hastily put his hand around Ninomiya’s wide open mouth, pleading him to stop making the noisy sound.
“Hell, just shut up okay!!!” He hissed, and Ninomiya’s eyes widened as he saw Jun’s face was so close to him. Jun swore he had never felt his heart beating that fast, the consequence of kissing Ninomiya and being scared all mixed together.
“NO!!! I’M NOT SHUTTING UP UNTIL YOU EXPLA…”
“BECAUSE I LIKE YOU, OKAY????” Jun roared, and he was sure that the whole hospital could hear his stupid confession by now. He could feel heat on his face when Ninomiya stared at him with utter shock, his mouth opened and closed in the progress of trying to say something, but he failed miserably.
“Now can you stop squeaking like a girl?” Jun sighed exasperatedly at a now-shut-up Ninomiya, who was still at a loss for word.
“What’s with that face?” Jun grunted and subconsciously leaned toward Ninomiya, who apparently hadn’t composed himself yet. Ninomiya still had that shock look on his face, and this brought frustration to Jun’s heart.
“What did you say?” was all Ninomiya managed to blurt out when finally his brain seemed to function again. Jun stared at him in disbelief. He had used all his courage to say that embarrassing confession and now Ninomiya was asking him to say it again?
“What did I say?” Jun repeated, feeling his face heat up and he hated how embarrassed he looked like at this moment when Ninomiya leaned closer to him, tried to find a hint of lie in his eyes. But of course, he found nothing. Because Jun was telling him the truth.
“You said you like me,” Ninomiya answered on behalf of Jun, and he still looked not entirely convinced “What…”
“Can’t you just stop looking so stupid like that?” Jun complained and hid his face behind his palms, unable to look into those eyes anymore.
“But no one has ever said that to me…” Ninomiya mumbled, his voice was still unsure “What? You like me?”
“Stop asking those stupid questions!!” Jun smacked Ninomiya’s head and Ninomiya bursting out laughing, left Jun staring at him uncertainly.
“What’s so funny?” Jun grunted uncomfortably “Why are you laughing?”
“It just…” Ninomiya laughed until he was shaking slightly, his face buried into his folding arms putting on his knee “I’m happy.”
“Huh?” Jun widened his eyes.
“I’m happy. Really.” Ninomiya repeated, his face was still hidden that Jun couldn’t see his expression, and he was willing to see it so much that he couldn’t help but put his arms around Ninomiya’s shoulder, making the other man startled and looked up immediately, just to find himself staring right at Jun’s face. Ninomiya blushed when he sensed the sudden closeness between them, and Jun was so convinced that this time, he could…
But Ninomiya shoved him away violently before he could ever do anything.
“What!!??”
“Don’t do that again!” Ninomiya squeaked, buried his face to the pillow and refused to let Jun get any further.
“Why??!!!”
“It’s embarrassing!!!!”
“Stop saying embarrassing!!! I’m the one who is embarrassed!!!!”
“You don’t look like you’re embarrassed at all!!!”
“But I am!!!!”
“You are?” Ninomiya looked at him suspiciously.
“Geez, stop that!!” Jun snapped “It’s not like you have never kissed someone before!”
“But it’s always me who initated the kiss!”
“And it’s not embarrassing??”
“No, it’s romantic!!!”
“I can’t believe you can say it outloud!”
“Why can’t I??”
“It’s sappy!”
“It’s not!!”
“Okay, now if you don’t shut up I’m going to kiss you right now!!! Roughly, harshly and barely let you breath!!” Jun snapped and smirked in victory when Ninomiya gasped and immediately shut his mouth. But he still looked unsure. When Jun leaned in and pecked his lips lightly, Ninomiya’s face turned a deep scarlet red and he pouted, hiding himself behind the pillow again. At that very moment, Jun was surprised to find out that Ninomiya actually looked cute. So cute, just like Nino sometimes when he was with Ohno, being happy and shining in love.
