First of all, belated thanks go to julie_weasley and priwskywalker for their Christmas cards. I was not too Christmas-ey this year, that's why I didn't send any cards. Sorry guys, I will try to be more excited next year

Oh, man, Eldest. I really, really wanted to read it. But I was so bored in the beginning. I had to start in the middle--it got interesting--and finish it, then go back to the start and read up to where I had initially started. They're not bad books, you're right, but so derivative. Obi-Brom Kenobi especially, I thought.
I think the middle of Eragon - they chasing the Raz'ac, only to NOT find them but be found by them and not accomplishing their revenge - was more boring. The very very beginning of Eldest, from Eragon's POV is boring, but Roran's is interesting! :)
The similarities to the Dragonriders of Pern are that the dragon recognizes his rider from birth (although in DoP the dragon just picks the best one from the bunch, he doesn't wait around for years and years); they communicate telepathically with them, and that when the rider dies, the dragon dies. In DoP, it usually worked the other way around, too, although there were some very strong willed people who managed to live after their dragon died.
Let me know if Eragon has the urge to mate when his dragon does, LOL.
I saw the movie, have not read the book. The movie was okay, but it didn't move me emotionally, and it was very predictable.
They haven't mated yet, but Eragon has his eye on a girl, and then Saphira in another occasion had her eye on a dragon, and they don't affect the other. But Saphira did warn Eragon to choose wisely because the girl would be connected to her as well. They get jealous of each other, it's funny! ;)
Not a Eragon reader, just a viewer!julie_weasleyDecember 28 2006, 22:31:22 UTC
It's not that I hated the movie. I just thought the script sucked - and as I haven't read the book, I can't say it's a script problem or a story problem. I felt like watching a bad children's adaptation to Lord of the Rings mixed with Star Wars.
Again: it's not about making references. It's just that they're lost there, they make no sense. I mean, what the hell was Eragon saying that Brom had forgotten what it was to be a Dragon Rider? Does HE know what it is to be a Dragon Rider?
Bad acting, bad direction... The only real good thing about that movie was Saphira. And I give Rachel Weizs (??) the credit for that.
The special effects were cool, but they were sometimes so big and so unfitting.
Caio said Eragon is apropriate for children under 10, since they won't comprehend the lack of links between the references and how the story is lacking...well...story!
Well, wasn't that a long comment? Just because of that I'll be using a Ravenclaw icon, since I fell like a bumbling Ravenclaw right now.

But THAT's how the BOOK feels like! I think I wasn't too clear on my post... :P
Granted, the book DOES have more background around the characters, linking them and explaining their actions, than the film, but still....it's a LOTR/SW adaptation! XD
