This is really fun!tonithegreatMay 20 2015, 01:55:06 UTC
I am just popping in here to say, "Thanks a million!" to everyone who has commented on my daughters' stuff. This has been such a great experience for them so far. Better than I would have imagined! Tuesdays are crazy full days for us, so they didn't get a chance to do many responses today, but tomorrow once they get home from school, they are exited to interact with everyone!
It made my heart super happy for them to light up at seeing what was happening here. There is hope for the internet of future after all!
Re: editing, I think there is a range of good choices. I apparently have one daughter who uses the spell check feature of her ipad mini without reservation or prompting and one who blissfully ignores red underlines. I will talk to them both about how those things work, but I kinda think it is awesome that one wants to type out each word herself.
For qween394, who is nine: She types in Word. I give it a read-over, a few reminders of how things are done in books she reads and that maybe she should do them there, technical assistance with formatting if she needs it, and copy to post.
For happinydancer, who is six: I expected to be typing out what she told me, but she wanted to type it herself, so she did and I copied it into the post. I fixed obvious weird formatting (like there being spaces before periods) but otherwise it was all her.
Olivia did the same thing- writing her entry out on paper and then I helped her type it up. It was fun because I had a blog article due, so we sat next to each other and each worked on our writing. I have to thank Gary for giving us the opportunity to do something like this. It felt very special and was a good bonding opportunity, and she can't wait to do it again :)
As for editing, I did point out one spelling error and helped her re-work the grammar in one of her sentences, but otherwise left the piece as she wrote it. I actually think it may be a good exercise for us to look at the piece again in 6-8 months and see if she sees anything that she thinks needs editing.

I knew that *I* would - but I was hoping that the kids would be "into it".

I've been getting the "I can't write on a computer". So she does it long-hand.
11 years old and already an "artist". ;)
