I've only read two entries so far, I was saving them for this evening or tomorrow, so I can savor each one. I'll (maybe) let you know once I've finished reading. :)
First??
(GR has been up for OVER AN HOUR and I'm first??? Geez!)
I posted on Facebook. This is a rare and weird day. I have no idea if it'll get more eyes on the contest, but that was my hope. Also, I could hardly issue a challenge for people to step out of their comfort zones without actually doing so myself. :P
I'm still reading (as in, just started reading at all). I'll get back to you on that favorites thing. And as for Top 10... oh man... it's too early in the morning for this, Gary. ~checks the time~ It's too um, early in the late morning for... I'll quit while I'm behind and go get some caffeine.
I really like crisp_sobriety and sobota this week -- and I say this because I think they could use a bit more attention. (Which isn't to detract from the other entries -- nothing against the rest of you.)
What's intriguing is how the placement of the question time-wise thoroughly changes its meaning. If asked at the top 100, or top 50. Picking a top ten would feel a lot more like bigging up some awesome writers. Whereas now it feels exclusionary, especially as the people not included will be in the minority.
You're right - a top 10 list now does feel more like an exercise in exclusion, even though there are far fewer people to be excluded - I guess because there are fewer of us, it has more potential to just feel personal? I'm not inclined to take it personal (heh - there's no arguing with taste, after all, and there is NO WAY we'd all make the same "these are my personal favorites writers out of the ones left" list) but I can certainly see how it would lead to hurt feelings.
The dynamic of this thing really does change a LOT over the course of the season, doesn't it. It's fascinating. :)
On the news last night, there was a piece about a meeting going on right at that moment in a neighbouring county about....I'm not making this up.....dedicating a huge swathe of ranch land for use as an elephant sanctuary. If I had had any idea...I would have been sitting at that meeting instead of in my living room. Because bringing elephants back to North America is a great idea and yes yes yes. There was, alas, no mention on the news, although I am certain sure it is being discussed in detail by the movers and shakers, about the possibility of sanctuaried bulls and musth.
I'm not sure the eastern elephants we still have are up for the cold and snow we get in that part of California. Unless it's more to the east/west of you than a northern county? You're kind of on the border of the weather-system divide. :)

No comment on my Top 10. That way lies madness.

We have a new baby elephant at our zoo. I want to squeeze her, but I'm pretty sure it's not allowed.

I will have to research this elephant sanctuary pitch and find out how it's going over with the locals!
