After what I felt (and still do) was one of my best pieces of writing in 3 seasons I've participated saw me in SCI, I relaxed about it, and stopped trying too hard. It is a nice feeling :).

I really found some amazing authors here, and some powerful writing that really helped me personally. :)
I am also proud of myself. There is a time when I would have jumped off a cliff before being involved in an actual competition, a time when a simple review would send me into the fetal postition in tears. I have been surprisingly relaxed here and ENJOYED playing around with different things. It is so nice to just enjoy writing without so much pressure.

I set my original entry aside last night after realizing I likely wouldn't manage to make it shape up by the deadline. The words didn't go in the dustbin, but they need to grow and develop over several chapters of a novel, which isn't exactly conducive to an Idol entry.

Now I'm working on a nonfiction entry that's coming together more easily. It might not fit the prompt as well, but I believe that it's undeniably mine.

This season's been full of surprises for me, including:
+ I'm surprised that my first response to most of the prompts has been to write fiction. As late as last season, I still thought of fiction as the riskier choice.
+ I'm surprised that I've overcome the internal editor to the extent I have.
+ I'm surprised that I've been so calm about the voting. I think that's because Exhibit A is a gift. If we had gone right into Season 9, I would have been terrified of making the same mistakes I made in prior seasons and never getting another chance. But Exhibit A is a chance to write that I didn't think I'd get. I want to make the ( ... )

I've been doing much more fiction, too. I don't think it's nearly as risky as it used to be (although poetry is still on the bubble in terms of riskiness, IMO). I'm enjoying writing more, too.

I think you're a very good writer, and I too have the same trend towards conciseness and being deliberate. I enjoy not "wasting" words, if that makes sense.

I agree about poetry, since 3 were voted down to SCI last week. But it may depend on who's writing it and what was said, since one survived. I don't know the factors other people use when they vote for poetry, but for me I tend to have to be really impressed and/or laugh. I think I like funny poetry best.

I like funny poetry best too, but of the poems/poets who went to SCI from last week, I really thought eeyore_grrl should have done better; I was sad to see her knocked out.

I think the biggest surprise for me is discovering that I can write quasi-YA (obviously not THIS week). I have completely fallen in love with Charlotte and Elizabeth.

I also screwed up my courage and sent a copy of the first Charlotte/Elizabeth story to my inspiration for Elizabeth. She was flattered. :)

That wasn't YA? ;)

In this day and age, it might be. Who knows?

Wow. I just sounded like an old fogey, didn't I? Stupid impending 40th birthday.

Hey now! I'm eyeing 40, too, but I reject the idea of being old. I feel younger and better than ever.

I am surprised at how easy it was to fall back into the fun of idol. The fun of writing and reading.

I have done idol three other times and by that last season I wasn't feeling that fun. I was letting myself get to stressed out by it.
