All the way up to the sun
Once he had tucked both girls in, Brittany’s dad left the room, leaving a night lamp on for his daughter, who was still rather afraid of the dark.
The two six-year-olds felt silent quickly. Santana yawned, exhausted from what had been a really tiring day: she’d been invited over at Brittany’s, and with prior approval from her mami (“You’d better behave, está claro Santanita?”), they had spent all Thursday’s afternoon together. They had worked on their sums and then they’d spent the rest of the day coloring, eating pizza -which was declared to be the best food ever, as it had their respective favorite colors: yellow and red- and they had watched a movie.
Santana was now resting on her side, and she could feel her eyes closing with sleep, but Brittany kept tossing and turning, clearly thinking of something that was bugging her. Finally she rested on her back, looking at the ceiling. Just as Santana had almost drifted into sleep, she heard her Brittany’s soft voice. “San?”, she tried, hoping she was still awake. She answered with a soft yes, and so the blonde girl asked: “Do your mom and your dad kiss? In the mouth I mean”. Santana opened her eyes. She could barely make out her friend’s face in the dim light, but she could see her blonde hair spread out over the pillow, her bangs falling over her forehead. “Yeah, they do, when they say hello or at night”, she said.
“Oh”, Brittany acknowledged, “and why do they do that?”, she asked, turning her head to look at her friend. Santana remembered what her mom had told her when she had expressed that same doubt to her: “It’s because they love each other a lot B”. “Ohh”, Brittany repeated, pondering on the response.
She was quiet again, but not for long. “I love you a lot Santy, like this much”, she stated, stretching out her little arms as much as she could. Her friend smiled and answered, pointing to the ceiling: “I love you even more, from here to the moon”. The blonde girl giggled at the thought, and turned on her side to look straight into the other one’s eyes. “No, wait, I love you from here all the way up to the sun, that’s the most furthest you can go”, Santana went on, excited with the idea of such a distance. Brittany grinned and added: “Me too, from here to the sun. Forever”, and then she put one of her hands over Santana’s shoulder.
They felt silent for a long time, and once again, just as Santana was half asleep, Brittany called her name quietly. Her friend moaned slightly, but it was enough for the little girl to know she hadn’t fallen asleep yet. “Santy, d’you think we can kiss like that?”. Santana’s eyes fluttered open with the question, only to see Brittany was staring intently at her, and she realized that her friend’s hand was still lying on her shoulder, and that the spot felt very warm under her palm. “We can, only if we want to”, she whispered, and then added: “I want to”. Brittany smiled her biggest smile and stated: “Me too”. And with that, she drew closer and gave Santana a soft short kiss, which felt warmer than the sun.
