New York Vs. Miami

Apr 29, 2010 23:35

For picspammy's challenge nineteen: second chance. A very small, very sad attempt at comparing the only two shows of the CSI franchise that I watch. Ignore my obvious bias towards New York. I can't help it. There's a lot more, too. I just can't think. SO.

Also, not much having to do with Season 8 of Miami. So, no Jesse or Walter or anything.

Theme song comparison! Opening credits are at least alive and well within crime show dramas. So every CSI has a Who song for their opening. New York's got Baba O'Riley and Miami has Won't Get Fooled Again. And they both just fit the shows so very well. New York used to have a lot more words with it. And the yeah yell at the beginning of Miami's is a long running joke along with Horatio's irony statements. Also, New York seems to be more directed toward the city and patriotism and such and Miami is more about...the ocean? Yeah. That's right. Although, I suppose, New York is a bigger city...And New York is more about darker colors, specifically blue, while Miami likes bright, sunshiny things.

Mac Taylor vs. Horatio Caine

Um. Mac is my obvious favorite because it's Gary freakin' Sinise. And that cannot be topped. And Horatio's good for making jokes. Yeah. Anyway. Um. Mac and Horatio are the heads of their teams. Mac is an ex-lieutenant marine and is originally from Chicago and Horatio used to solely be a cop and is originally from New York (:O). In New York, you have to be a detective to be a legit CSI (not the same as a lab tech) while in Miami you don't know. So Mac's a detective. And Horatio is a lieutenant. And they both have some authority issues, by the way, because Mac gets in trouble with the police chiefs and Horatio always finds a way to get in trouble with Stetler (IAB).

Also, they both can totally look at something and just know. It's insane. But that's why they get paid the big bucks (yeah right).

Peyton Driscoll vs. Yelina Salas

I'm comparing these to as an add on to the comparison between Horatio and Mac. They're both the failed love interest. Horatio has an obviously huge issue with ever being with Yelina because she's his sister-in-law (his brother is dead, though, so let's not all freak out about that). They never actually got together, but there was some drama about Stetler going out with her and a storyline of him being abusive that they abandoned real quick (I love Rick). Peyton and Mac, on the other hand, did get together for around a season's worth. And their relationship seemed to be fine, but then they went to London, Peyton's homeland, and she decided to stay. Although, she's supposed to be back this season, so, who knows. Obvious differences in the two, Peyton's an M.E. and Yelina was a detective/P.I.

Reed Garrett vs. Kyle Harmon

Also an extended Mac vs. Horatio. They both kind of have sons! Horatio's is legit, while he was undercover he had a relationship with Julia, Kyle's mom. And he didn't find out about Kyle until he was chasing him down. Mac's is not entirely legit. Mac's wife, Claire, who died in the attacks on 9/11, had Reed when she was seventeen, before she even knew Mac, and gave him up for adoption. Once Reed got old enough, he came looking for her and only found Mac, so. Both of the boys have some definite issues and attract trouble. Horatio found Kyle in the first place because he was blackmailed into kidnapping. Eventually he ends up working at the M.E.'s office for a while and now he's in Iraq or Afghanistan. Reed has a passion for journalism and got himself into a lot of trouble with the Cabbie Killer. Mac and Horatio come to the rescue whenever their boys are in trouble, though, you know.

Stella Bonasera vs. Calleigh Duquesne

The leading ladies. Or the second in command. Stella's a detective, naturally, and Calleigh's just a CSI, but she specailizes in Ballistics. Stella's background is still rather murky, but her mother was definitely from Greece. But she never knew her parents. Calleigh on the other hand is a home grown Louisiana girl. All we really know about her parents is that her dad is a lawyer and an alcoholic. Both are fierce. And both can run around in heels like nobody's business, although sometimes they both have questionable wardrobe choices considering their job. Also, they've both been kidnapped, so that's good times. Calleigh was just because she was a CSI and they wanted to cover up a murder. Stella's boyfriend was crazy and she eventually got the upper hand and killed him. So yeah. They also both really respect and look up to their superiors. Although, admittedly, Stella's more of a BFF for Mac. Horatio's BFF is totally Eric. So. Yeah.

Don Flack, Jr. vs. Frank Tripp

The detectives. These two keep the crime lab tied to the police department. Flack is the obvious anomaly within the franchise, as both of the other shows have older detectives, but you can't count him out because he's a flippin' first grade. He's very good with snark and Tripp's always got some great comments, too. Tripp almost got blown up and Flack did, so there's that. They also don't have great luck with women...as Tripp (I think) ended up getting divorce (he also has kids which woah) and Angell got shot on the job. They've both definitely had some hard times. But we still don't know much about Frank. Don, on the other hand, is very much a main character.

Danny Messer vs. Eric Delko

They both have kind of different positions on the show, but have to be compared to one another. Eric is kind of like Don and Danny combined, in that he's the next lead guy after the main, while Don and Danny both kind of are. But it's cool, 'cause they're buddies. They're both athletes. And they've both got ties to illegal activities, Eric's being that his dad was in the Russian mob and Danny's got that whole New York Italian mob family going on. Although, it was just the Tanglewood boys gang that was the issue, which is a little less brutal/lethal than the entire Russian mob. As with pretty much everyone else, Danny's a detective and Eric's just a CSI. They've also both gotten shot on the job. Danny's spine in a drive by shooting, which resulted in him not being able to walk for a while, and Eric got shot in the head, so he had some memory issues and it also resulted in a later issue of the bullet getting all raddled. But now they've removed it. It's all good. They're both also the front men in the main romantic relationships of the shows. Danny with Lindsay and Eric with Calleigh. Also, Danny's brother got beaten into a coma and Eric's sister had some form of cancer (I can't remember) and ultimately was shot and killed.

Aiden Burn vs. Tim Speedle

These two are the original final members of the team, but they're both long gone now. Aiden got obsessed with trying to take down a rapist and he eventually turned the tables on her and killed her, although she gave them enough evidence to take him down in the end. Speed was killed in a shootout at a jewelry store, I think, because he didn't clean his gun and it misfired. They were both pretty good at their jobs though. And as far as I know were both from New York. But I don't know much about Aiden. Also, side note, Speed always seemed to wear shirts that were too big for him. And Vanessa Ferlito has Angelina Jolie lips. For shizzle.

Lindsay Monroe Messer vs. Ryan Wolfe

The replacements. Lindsay's from Montana and fit in pretty easily, while it took Ryan quite a while to really be accepted as he was just seen as the replacement (and nobody really wanted Speed to be replaced). He was originally a traffic cop, and as far as I know Lindsay worked as a CSI in Montana before being transferred. Both were very eager to please in the beginning. And, of course, they have their issues. Ryan probably way more so than Lindsay. Like Lindsay was the only survivor of a shooting when she was around sixteen, but Ryan has, you know, gotten shot in the eye with a nail gun, been tortured, had a gambling issue...Random fun fact, they both kind of had secrets about the boss. I mean, Ryan was the only one who knew Horatio was still alive at one point which is admittedly more intense than Lindsay just knowing that Mac played bass. But the nature of the secret is not important!

Sheldon Hawkes vs. Natalia Boa Vista

The add on team member. Being a CSI was not exactly the first career choice of either. I mean, Natalia's not really doing anything different, but she used to be a DNA annalist at the FBI. Hawkes started out as a docter, and then was an M.E. and then decided to be a CSI. Although he's also a detective, so I don't know when he found the time to get that credential. So, uh, Hawkes is a genius and I'm not being unfair when I say that he's way more intelligent than Natalia because I'd say he's way more intelligent than anybody. Also, as we've recently learned, Hawkes had a sister who was murdered and Natalia had a sister that the crime lab ultimately saved.

Adam Ross vs. the lab techs

There are way more lab techs than this from Miami, but Valera and Cooper will suffice. Adam is an actual character on New York, a recurring one who's in the opening credits, while the lab techs on Miami change from episode to episode and don't really have defined character development. Although Valera did date Natalia's abusive ex-husband and Cooper was kind of stalking Calleigh. Adam's dad was abusive. And he's from Phoenix. And he was in a relationship with another lab tech for a little while, but she didn't last. Adam's also started going out into the field a little more, while on Miami we still haven't seen any lab techs outside of the lab.

Sid Hammerback vs. Alexx Woods

The M.E.s. Both shows have had trouble with keeping M.E.s. New York did in the beginning, once Hawkes switched to CSI work, and they also had Peyton for a little while, and Marty, although we didn't ever see much of him and he eventually went and got himself arrested because he was killing people to sell their cocaine filled organs. Sid's been around for awhile though, and he's now a regular, and he has a fantastic ability to go to a dark places and always has the best random facts. Miami's had a few since Alexx, but they can't seem to keep them generally. Like Tara was stealing drugs from victims. Alexx liked to talk to her DBs. They also both have great families! Apparently, I mean, we don't really get to see them.

The Trios

These three are the main characters of both shows. While Mac, Stella, and Flack work together a lot, Horatio, Eric, and Calleigh generally worked on separate cases. But all three are very protective of one another and also know how to push each other to the limit...

The Relationships

The main two relationships of the shows. Calleigh and Eric were a long time coming, while Danny and Lindsay managed to not take too long, although she got pregnant first. So, Danny and Lindsay are ahead of everyone else 'cause they're married and have a daughter, Lucy. Eric and Calleigh are at a strange point, though, since currently Eric's not working at the lab. So no one knows what's happening with them...

Over Seas

Random similarity, they've both been to foreign countries. Mac and Stella went to Greece, and Horatio and Eric went to Brazil. But Eric and Horatio killed all kinds of people and Mac and Stella only killed like one guy, so. But the law enforcement in Greece is more...law enforcing than Brazil, I guess.

Girls and their Weapons

Obviously. They both really like their weapons. Calleigh works in Ballistics, specializes in guns. And Lindsay's a country girl who enjoys bow and arrows and slingshots.

Marriage

There've been marriages on the shows: Danny and Lindsay and Horatio and Marisol. They both got married at the courthouse. Yeah.

Aw, they know each other. Lookit little Danny Messer!
