Unwanted Smoke Smell

Apr 23, 2017 07:56

Last week I noticed the smell of cigarette smoke in my bedroom and bathroom. I suspect it's coming from my downstairs neighbors' apartment because I can smell smoke outside their door on the landing too. This isn't a smoke-free building (nothing I can afford is smoke free) but this is a new problem with old neighbors. Maintenance managed to block the smell from coming through the access panel in my bedroom, which is great, but my bathroom reeks. I keep the door shut and run an air purifier in there 24/7, but it's hardly making a dent. My towels, shower curtain, and even my loofah smell like smoke. Maintenance says they can't do anything more.

I am asthmatic and cigarette smoke is a serious trigger for me. I've been coughing and wheezing and I hate being in my own apartment. Moving isn't currently an option for me (hopefully soon).

I have a few questions. Do you have any tips that might block the smoke smell? Would you talk to the tenants about it? And if you did, what would you say?

edit: A combo of solutions have almost entirely resolved the problem. New caulk around the bathtub and toilet, charcoal air purifiers in the cabinet under the sink, and a fairly cheap air purifier in the bathroom have all made my apartment livable again. I called management a few more times and had maintenance back up to see if we could find a solution. The new bathroom caulk made the biggest difference. I ended up not talking to my neighbors. We live in the Midwest, where it is either very cold, very hot, or raining very hard so often that smoking anywhere other than indoors in almost impossible. Next time, though- I'll be living in a smoke-free building. Thanks for your help!
