Backing up my journal.

Dec 30, 2016 22:11

Hey guys. What's this about LJ shutting down? Will my entries be erased?

AND!

What is the best way to back up all my LJ entries with the comments without copying and pasting each and every one into a Word document or something tedious like that?

Thanks!

Four ways I have found

1) sign up at www.dreamwidth.org and use their tool to pull all your posts and comments across - basically cloning your journal over to dreamwidth.

2) LJ Archive tool - http://www.memory-prime.de/lja/ljarchive_setup.zip - install it, point it at your livejournal and it will download all your posts and comments

3) On livejournal, you can go into settings and export your journal entries to xml or csv, but there's no simple way to export comments. That requires writing some code, or using LJ Archive or another tool that has written that code for you.

4) I haven't tried it, but if you sign up for a wordpress account, they have a plugin that will export all your entries and comments from livejournal and import them into your wordpress account.

I used the linked tool and it has a great look, however didn't pull the first 8 months of my journal. I'm guessing that it does have a limitation to the amount of info it can transfer at 1 time. And I notice the posts are not all in chronological order. But it did pull it out with comments and looks nice.

After looking at it again what it didn't pull were posts made before Al gifted me a permanent account. I also noticed that it will save a post twice if I changed the posting status - friends to public, public to private...

I was always under the impression it was a tool exclusively for paid/permanent users....

Hence I never dabbled. Not being one of the elite n' all...

I know it's been a couple of days but I wanted to pop in and say thank you for the link to the archive tool. It worked great.

They aren't. It's the same thing that happened back when SUP bought out LJ everyone Chicken Littled and ran to Dreamwidth. The servers are now in Russia which is why everyone here is saying this.

I'm staying.

Where did you hear they were shutting down?

Seems odd that they would do that, when 3 days ago they sent me an email telling me they were adding 2 weeks paid time to my journal for my loyalty and support during their recent technical issues.
