When I finally got to see Full Metal Jacket for the first time a couple months ago, I immediately recognised Adam Baldwin and FLAILED AND SPAZZED. And died at how Animal Mother is so very, very much a young Jayne.

My take on Firefly AU

I'd set it in the immediate aftermath of the American withdrawal.

Mal: US Army sergeant. Deserted after his unit got wiped out. Mercenary by default.

Jayne: Another US soldier, also a deserter, though more out of boredom. Mercenary by inclination.

Zoe: US Army nurse. Faked Mal's death certificate and deserted with him. Mercenary by necessity.

Wash: Civilian pilot, ended up doing shady "Air America" missions in South East Asia.

Inara: Runs a nightclub/casino/brothel in Saigon. Extremely well connected. A female Rick from "Casablanca" Frequent patron of Mal.

Kaylee: hippie mechanic girl, wandered off from Berkeley engineering school and somehow ended up in South East Asia. "Wow, that was some acid trip."

Simon and River: Med student who rescued his sister from MK Ultra-type experiments back in the US and has been on the run ever since.

Book: Allegedly a Buddhist priest.

The Tao: The battered but hardworking DC-3 Mal owns and Wash flies.
