But, yeah, I think there would be a way to pull this off so that it falls just shy of being goofy and goes right into incredibly creepy territory, kind of Uncanny Valley-style. It would be difficult, and it would depend precisely what kind of 'verse you're writing for, but there would definitely be a way that you could have something... off enough about him to be freaky. A broken cuckoo clock is creepy as all get-out.
(I'm kind of reminded of the Lechku and Nechku in Okami, who somehow manage to fall between "scary" and "awesome" despite being... clockwork owls with top hats and monocles.)
