...Which is an opportunity to argue with someone on the internet. Now, while I agree with you, on almost every point above, and I think that racial equality is a good idea, I do have a problem with affirmative action, as it is currently implemented. Mostly, I have a problem with the idea that we purposely hold students of different races to different standards, (I'm mostly centering around college entrance qualifications, since that is where my experience lies) Now, I realize that students in low-income areas, have drastically different educational experiences than someone in an upper-middleclass school do, I still think the idea of holding someone to a different standard, based solely on race, is flawed. If you take the much lamented Bridgeport school system as an example, roughly 45% of the students are white, 30% African American. They both get the same shitty education, in the same shitty school, in the same shitty neighborhood. Do they both get the same chance at getting into higher education? No. Because of affirmative action, ( ... )

I don't think most people (myself included) would argue your point that it's an imperfect system--but it's definitely better than nothing. I also think that there's a world of difference between how this brand of racial integration interacts with the public school system (available regardless of merit) and higher education/the workforce (theoretically a meritocracy--though this is largely untrue). This means that the implementation of affirmative action that the Supreme Court ruled against yesterday is probably the _least_ problematic, since there is no one that is more or less qualified to attend public school ( ... )
